Label/Format: Columbia – original green format with very gently textured surfaces and glossy finish. Side one has a vintage ‘W T’ embossed tax code, both in pristine condition with no flattening or ink rubbing to their fragile surface at all.

Label Conditions: Both are in amazing conditions, especially so considering the sheer age, mode and popularity of this record. They are very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks (in this case traces) tiny, very few and faint with no wear around the hole area. This amazing very early pressed record appears hardly played and sounds superb with minimal traces of wear or sound issues. Also consider most of these records were played with sharper steel spindles that left their mark more freely.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 148 grams. A typical heavy weight for the time.

Rarity: Scarce as an original on the green label. Most 1960s copies are on the black and blue format that came later. Also, let’s put this into context for condition. Records that date way back to the early 1960s were still often played with steel needle gramophones or the most basic of mono record players. Such units tracked at astonishing weights that beggar belief compared to more refined and modern stereo players. The results often catastrophic for sound quality, thus these early classics still from the era of 78 rpm shellac records, only really can offer top sound quality if they are hardly played. Well Cliff Richard – the UK’s answer to Elvis – like the King himself, proved very popular right from the very beginning. Both artists records were heavily played and finding them with minimal evidence of any are far harder to find. The very early titles, even earlier than Beatles albums, and we all know the state the very early mono copies of those are like, are more often seen trashed. So early Cliff albums when found like this are a thing of beauty, and here the cover also is very nice. They sold in considerable numbers, but few of the green label ones will survive this clean, that is a pure fact. A wonderful opportunity for fans of this evergreen popular singer, here backed by The Shadows.

Brief Info: This was Cliff Richard’s fourth album, issued way back in April 1961 with eight songs backed by The Shadows. This combination offered some of the very best popular music of the era. . Never underestimate how difficult the original green Columbia label copies are to find in top conditions compared to later ones. This is a beauty with barely any degrading of the lovely mono sound. Most of these were played on VERY basic, even harsh heavy-tracking record players of the time. Just one jolt or arm drop meant very deep scratches or crators on the record resulting in loud clicks, jumps or sticks. But even without such traumas, the sound could degrade even with average usage or less. So finding one of these in this superb, and appearing hardly played condition with an attractive cover to match, is far from easy. An impressive near archive-quality record that could mean a major upgrade for many. This is a copy most Cliff fans will treasure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate, this wraps around all the closed edges and ends on the back via three external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. This is a heavy-duty thick card cover with the correct mono SX prefix. It comes complete with the early Polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity and has hardly any lifting or creasing. A little dulling is seen under light and there are a few, mostly fine laminate marks. Viewed full-on, these hardly show, but can be seen more again under angled light. However, this is still a very impressive example and it will take a fair degree of beating.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive, the main back matt unprotected panel only gently darkened, this mostly on the very left edge and little to fault that apart with any marks small and also light. No ringwear and any fine creases on the laminate of the flipbacks that will rarely escape entirely. All three are solid and clean as well with hardly burr traces to the ends which are free of the usual grime, just one teeny chip on the right. Like the front, this will take some beating.

Top Edge: Practically as made: very straight, smooth, unscuffed and white, the odd tiny mark being ultra critical.

Bottom Edge: Unworn up to the very right tip which has a smallish rub. These resting edges rarely escape this neat and lacking wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with very little wear at all. Any thickening or burring minuscule on the thicker than average card as early ones were. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The narrow unprotected laminate end strip on the front has only minor hints of any wear, most on the bottom corner tip area as mentioned already.

Spine and Text: A superb spine as well. Very solid, straight with barely any compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that is totally scuff-free and smooth.

Corners: Just small rubbing to the bottom right, always the most vulnerable as it always meets any rack storage first, this relatively light, but does represent the most wear on this splendid cover. All others are impressive and retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A few minor visual blemishes to the front laminate, but just consider the age of this vintage piece. Most probably seen split, creased, dulled and even torn. It puts an attractive example like this into true perspective. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical or an inner this amazing age. A polylined white inner with the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. Two immaculate window circles and quite clear, if gently crinkled lining, but firmly intact. Any creasing light and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This overall, has aged little.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better for such a piece. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks quite few, mainly light and superficial as mostly seen critically under angled light. This very early mono record has avoided any significant or major traumas with no penetrating scratches, both playing surfaces will prove difficult to find better on a green label copy of this record. Visually a lovely, way better than average example that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage Cliff album plays even above it’s generally impressive visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, clean sound with minimal traces of any degrading from a record that is one of the oldest I have ever offered on Ebay – and now into my 14th year. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface or unwanted sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Deep and more resilent grooves – and they had to be – these were designed for theh ‘mono’ era and equipment. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. For fans, these green Columbia label originals are the ultimate copies to own and so rarely found this clean. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Few records this age, mode and popularity will escape a few light marks, the law of averages dictate this. So many seen are rendered unlistenable with horrendous abuse and marks, this is light years away from that. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record with easy, effortless tracking, it gave very few reminders of it’s considerable age. This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
