Despite a name that would place them in the American midwest, The Climax Chicago Blues Band was formed in 1967 in the town of Stafford, England. Frontman Colin Cooper had been in garage group The Hipster Image with guitarist Eric Leese (later of Donovan’s band), forming Climax with guitarist Pete Haycock, keyboardist Arthur Wood, drummer George Newsome, rhythm guitarist Derek Holt and bassist Richard Jones. Recorded at Abbey Road for EMI’s Parlaphone subsidiary in late 1968, their self-titled debut was a straight-up blues album that was far less rock-oriented than their many subsequent releases, showcasing Cooper’s harmonica mastery and Haycock’s skills on slide guitar as well as standard lead; it is also the sole LP to feature Holt on rhythm guitar, since the departure of Jones would see Holt soon switching to bass. Along with competent versions of Big Bill Broozy’s “Mean Old World,” Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Don’t Start Me Talking,” Big Joe Turner’s “Wee Baby Blues” and a gratuitious take of “The Entertainer,” the album is mostly comprised of spirited Climax originals, the epic anguish of “And Lonely” evidencing the best of their collective abilities.
