Offered here is a killer white label DJ promo copy of the 45 Only The Lonely Cry b/w By Now by Clydie King And The Sweet Things. Vocal arranged by Dave Gates. Released in 1963 on Philips Records. Includes original Philips sleeve as issued.
Clydie King was discovered by Richard Berry. She performed with Little Clydie And The Teens and was a member of Ray Charles' Raeletts. She then became a very in demand session singer, working with such artists as The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan and more.
This single was among a 45 collection found in an old cardboard box from an estate. The box hadn't been disturbed in decades. It contained a collection of 12 page 45 folder/books, as well as a large stack of what appear to be unplayed promo 45s. Practically all the 45s are of the (Northern) Soul or Pop genre. These 45s sleeves were stapled together in sets of five, in such a way that the vinyl could not be removed from the sleeve. Possibly stapled in prep to send/deliver as promos to radio stations. Though the sleeves show age wear, I doubt, speaking for myself, it'd be an easy task to find these records in nicer condition (and they are completely returnable if not satisfied). At the bottom of the box was a copy of the Waterloo (Iowa) Daily Courier, dated December 14th, 1959.

Grading Guide as noted in The Standard Catalog of American Records -
NM (Near Mint) - Records are shiny with no visible defects or surface noise when played. Covers should have no ring wear, creases, folds, or seam splits. Writing, stickers, or other markings are not allowed.
VG+ (Very Good Plus or EX Excellent) - Records may show slight signs of wear including light scuffs, very light scratches, or slight warps that do not affect the listening experience. There may be light ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticable. Covers can have light creasing at corners, promotion or cut out mark (cut corner, small hole punch or cut in spine), as well as slight signs of ring wear. VG++ is at times used to indicate high end of this grade.
VG (Very Good) - Records can lack most of their original gloss. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, the record will have slight surface noise, even an occasional audible scratch, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and ending, but the noise will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers have minor seam splits. Minor writing, tape or sticker allowable, with possible visible ring wear.
G (Good) - The record still plays through without skipping, so it can serve as filler until something better comes along. It has significant surface noise and groove wear, and the label can be worn with significant ring wear, heavy writing, or obivious damage caused by someone trying to remove tape or stickers and failing miserably. Cover will have significant seam splits, possibly taped closed, highly obvious ring wear and hevavier writing.
An extra + or - might be included with grades to indicate high or low ends of grade.
