Description
MYSTERY AND CONTROVERSY surround this session for GREY GULL, the cheapest record company on the planet in 1929. Though this session gives the generic-sounding name "WABASH TRIO," this Radiex record bears no artist credit whatever. The personnel has been bashed about since the '40s, changing every time. The latest information suggests these are the boys responsible for "COAL BLACK BLUES":
LOUIS METCALF (trumpet) / J.C. JOHNSON (piano) / BERNARD ADDISON (guitar).
I accept this. What's NOT in dispute is that this performance is a beauty - a jazz trio, tempo slow, packs a wallop, like hundred-year-old Scotch.
The other side, "DOWN AMONG THE SUGAR CANE" is equally un-named, but it's the GREY GULL HOUSE BAND, and all that goes with it!
This original 1929 Radiex 1710 is in decent E- condition - a few dings, plays undistorted, but pressed on that lousy Grey Gull shellac!
*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
