Cold Blood are a recent discovery for me and I can't believe they aren't better known. Apparently around the San Fransisco Bay area lead singer Lydia Pense was a bit in the shadow of her contemporary Janis Joplin. That and the fact that everyone was obsessed with psychedelia at the time.

Still this is one of the best examples of funky big band R and B released by a white band of this vintage. The album opens with the gospelly sounding "I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel To Be Free" which sounds like it could have been done by Eva Cassidy. It's a capella at first with a gradual build up of instrumentation and power as the song progresses and Lydia Pense's vocals are just sublime.

The album also contains killer covers of Sam and Dave's "You Got Me Hummin'" and a version Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You" which really smokes. (Possibly only exceeded by their live version on "The Last Days of the Filmore") It's musically tight and mean with great playing all round and excellent horn arrangements. Also ends with an up tempo "Watch Your Step" which is awesome.

Fans of Janis a la Cosmic Blues, early Tower of Power, Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears will really dig this album. My only criticism is that it's a little light on original songs.
