Jazz composer and saxophonist Ornette Colman delivered his monumental eighth album on Atlantic in 1962, etting the stage for a weird yet delightful renaissance in jazz to come. Named after Coleman's one-off stint on tenor sax (rather than his usual alto) the brassblower is heard in full swing almost immediately after the record's start, which precariously toes the line of a virtuoso's run and gadfly's buzz. With most of the record reserved for urbane imbrovisation, the epic that unfolds is not straightforward, and is as roundabout in feel as the sonic lines trailed behind by its own many sax lines, not to mention a secondary, complementary pocket trumpet from Don Cherry.
