Description
An excellent condition example of the very first UK 8 track cartridge release in September 1970, of " Collection of Beatles Oldies " by The Beatles. Stereo with tape speed of 3 & 3/4 ips. Comes with an original tape head cover flap. Excellent.
There is label heat raising to the full colour cover labels. This is common on most 8 track cartridges, but it does not detract from the overall excellent condition. No tearing of the very clean labels. (See Photos)
The tape head backing strip has been replaced with new, and the pivot wheel cleaned. Tested and plays perfectly. Supplied with a spare separate foil sensing strip. (See photo) An easy operation to fit should the originals slip.
These first release UK Beatles 8 track tapes came in blue wrappers with a large rectangular cut-out cellophaned window to show the cover label, (NO inlays as with the later REissues) but most owners discarded these after opening, considering them simply to be part of the packaging you threw away. The last photo shows one of these wrappers (NOT included with this item). You would be extremely lucky to find an 8 track cartridge with one today !
These first 8 track releases of the rest of the Beatles UK catalogue (with the exception of "Sgt Pepper" & "Abbey Road" in Nov 1969, and "Let It Be" in mid 1970 - which had the tracklisting on the front label) were sold from September/October 1970 to end of 1971, and are known as the "tombstone" label first releases after the style of the front label.
After that period REissues were sold throughout the whole 1970s in varying front/rear label designs (some in poor monochrome) and packaged in cardboard slip boxes and plastic cases with inlays.
I bought this item from one collector as part of a carefully looked after Beatles catalogue - all cartridges which were in the same lovely condition. Please see photographs. Reasonably priced given its nice condition.
