Every jungle, hip-hop, drum & bass, breakbeat and breakcore artist will have sampled or will sample Think (About It) at some point in time, though whether they admit it boils down to their skill in flouting copyright law. But its original story is probably part of what made it such fair game for later experimenters: less a debut LP than a coronation, Collins was already in Brown's revue by 1972, shoring up his discipline and drummers' exactitude. Though assistance was needed: this star song was entirely penned and produced by the king of funk and soul himself. The ensuing album, to contrast, nails itself between militant funk snap and stretchier soul, with an evergreen take on Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine', plus her own 'Woman's Lib' and 'Things Got To Get Better'. Essential, and not just for the famous break.
