The songwriting of Icelandic maverick Emiliana Torrini has found many counterpoints to help render its stark beauty in compelling new contexts, yet it may just be that this live album is the most diverting one yet. Opening up new vistas that may not have been originally suggested, the Belgian orchestra The Colorist offer up arrangements that blend richly textured strings and woodwinds one minute, and are happy to jump off the deep end of abstraction the next, all the while using her voice as the starting point, its emotional intensity undimmed and its delicate tones delicately augmented. A most understated tour de force.
