The album kicks off with the seething title track, a paean to a wild young kid "Born on the run" who blows his mind "on a pretty pink pill" and spaces himself "completely with metal sounds". It's very close to the group's street-level take on life, yet it's almost sci-fi rock in a way with a narrative that unfolds like a fantasy novel. The track's momentum is further enhanced by the heavily distorted vocals on the chorus which spit out "Heavy Metal/Heavy Metal/Heavy Metal" in a metallic, mantra-like tone. 

From there the album burns its way through a wide range of moods and styles. There are the rockin' 12-bar tracks like the salacious "Do It", the humourous "Private Eye" (which also manages to incorporate the old "Peter Gunn" riff) and a cover of Leiber/Stoller's "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care". Then there's the melodic, joyous pop-rock of "Just Because" (Loyde playing some of his best ever lead licks on this cut), "Need Your Love" and "Dance to the Music". The second half of the original Side Two comprises an experimental suite that mixes hard rock ("Sitting Bull", "Custer's Last Stand") and gentle instrumentals ("Metal Feathers") with double time space rock ("Tin Tango"). Probably the album's finest track is the prog-rock epic "Back to You" with its rolling guitar chords and multi-layered keyboard backing.
