Jazz Side 1 - Track 1. India Side 1 - Track 2. Up 'gainst The Wall Side 2 - Track 1. Impressions Side 2 - Track 2. After The Rain
North Carolina-born John Coltrane catches his classic quartet in a state of controlled overflow, the music swelling at the seams and never quite spilling, but always threatening to. With McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, the group moves like a single breathing organism that's dense yet strangely buoyant. 'India' gathers itself in low with droning folds and percussion circling like heat rising off asphalt, then 'Impressions' drives forward, Jones's drums in constant churn and Coltrane tracing those long and tensile lines through to the centre. 'After The Rain' loosens the grip, notes spaced wide, each one suspended, basically reluctant to fall.
