Description
Columbia Grand 5" cylinder record in WHITE wax SCOTTISH CHIMES OF NORMANDIE BY GILMORES BAND. Patrick Gilmore was the most famous band leader of his time (see bio below) and his band continued to perform long after his death in 1892. Wax is off white or a cream color, not the usual chocolate brown. Overall in VG condition with no mold or cracks. Has an edge chip (see photo) but does not go into the recording. Comes with a very nice original hand titled box. Reasonable opening, no further reserve. Happy to answer any Q's. See my other auctions for other rare recordings. Patrick S. Gilmore (1829-1892) was born in Ireland, he spent most of his career in the United States, where he was attached to several bands. In 1858 he established his own ensemble, Gilmore's Band, which served during the Civil War as the band for the 24th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. In 1873, Gilmore left Boston to accept a position as director of the 22nd Regiment of New York Band, which served as one of the most famous American professional bands until Gilmore's death. We see Gilmore in his 22nd Regiment uniform in this photograph.
