Description
This is US Columbia ML 4215 (earliest blue label 1B/1B), "A Piatigorsky Recital," with Gregor Piatigorsky, cello and Ralph Berkowitz, piano. Works include a matchless performance of the Chopin Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op.65, along with the Schubert Introduction, Theme, and Variation in B-Flat Major, Op.82, No.2 (arranged by Piatigorsky), the Schumann: Fantasiestueck No.1, Op.72 and the Faure Elegie. The New Yorker review of this very record, ML 4215, from December 3, 1949, praises it for its "wonderfully lifelike quality."
These blue label US Columbias from the late '40s/early '50s never had quiet surfaces, but this one plays beautifully, with clear, vivid sound against the typically elevated noise floor of early vinyl. In appearance, there's full gloss, with a few faint marks. Among these blue label US Columbias, it plays about a NM, I think, even with a stereo stylus. Jacket shows little wear, but minor foxing, so VG+. A fine collector's copy of a scarce record.
