ULTRA RARE PRIVATE PRESS
STUDENT PROJECT LP
STEREO, NO LABEL, 1970
Incredibly rare "real people," "key of Z", private press LP rarely seen on eBay or anywhere else. This is the nicest copy my fellow collector friends or I have seen and the last one I had (and sold) was in quite decent shape. Here, printed with the kind permission of noted psych collector Mike Ascherman is his description of this rare gem:Here is the ultimate in the realm of reality known as the 60s/70s stoned high school student project LP. Hailing from the Island of Long , these suburban stonees definitely pulled some wool over the eyes of the faculty. Beginning with a mock broadcast from radio station WTHC (!), the drug references flow through a pastiche of psych, folk, jugband, some "classical music is great stoned" (courtesy of Igor Stravinsky), and a few truly bent poems including the Shakespearean ode to MacDonald's, Cheeseburger Lament from Omlette.
Highlights are Adam's Rib, a girl garage band performing a great pop-psych/punker Hide Your Love; the proto-roots sound of The Amalgamated Pickle Plant and Home Brew Distillery (whose repertoire includes David Peel's Happy Mother's Day; and most uniquely, one Emmanuel Angel. Angel performs 2 lengthy instrumentals on which he plays everything- guitar, keys, bass, drums- and quite well. The sounds are berzerk progressive psychedelia via early Zappa/Mothers filtered through distorted, fuzzed, speeded up guitars and organs. Finally, the last track is titled The End and lasts 1 second.
If that isn't enough, the LP is housed in an incredible pink and black psychedelic cover. There are plenty of pics of our student stonees on the front. The back is a great abstract design.
This LP is featured in Hans Pokora's 1001 Record Collector Dreams book with a six-disc rating for rarity; that's as high as it goes. This is one of those proverbial "count the number of known copies on your fingers with a few left over" LPs. Though it has been known in the inner circles for 15 years or so, it was only last year that a copy was first offered in a list, and that went easily for a grand amount.
Condition: Visually, this record is just shy of NM, so I'll give it a VG+. When played it is also generally in that range, however there is one small "tick" at the start of side one (actually two ticks in the run-on groove and one when the track begins) and two significant "pops" in that same track. I can see the source of the "tick", but not the pops. My goal is for you to know what you are bidding on and for our transaction to go smoothly, so I have posted an mp3 of this area of the LP at: http://www.freewebs.com/morepax/context70.htm
The rest of the LP sounds and looks great. In keeping with the overall vibe of this project, even the labels seem designed to disorient the listener! All the copies I am aware of have either reversed side labels (side 1 = side 2 and vice versa) or have two side 2 labels (one yellow saying "side 2" for side one and one blue label saying "side 2" for side two). This copy is the apparently rarer two side 2 labels version.
The jacket is in very nice shape - slight edge wear along the bottom seam, light corner wear and light wear in general. No ring wear and no split seams. There is a very slight bend in the cover, which I have done my best to show in one of the photographs.
I have tried to very carefully describe all aspects of this record given its rarity and its reserve amount (speaking of which, please don't write to ask me what the reserve is).
