2026 already welcomed the return of Salem, Massachusetts metalcore pioneers Converge with the frenetic ten-track half-hour beast that was Love Is Not Enough. Reclaiming a style they were initially integral in pioneering, and recorded as always in guitarist Kurt Ballou's God City Studios, the resulting barrage of heaving breakdowns and head-melting time signatures were more than enough to satiate fans (even if ignoring 2021's collaborative Bloodmoon: I project with Chelsea Wolfe, it'd been almost a decade since 2017's The Dusk In Us for 30 minutes of new material). Crafting yet another LP in secretive tandem, Hum Of Heart serves as a sonic parasitic twin, straying from the caustic metalcore of its sibling and sonically embracing both their more noise-rock proclivities as well as channelling the emotional hardcore of their earlier material, such as Petitioning The Empty Sky. Clarifying their mindset, vocalist Jacob Bannon explains - "I could die tomorrow. We might as well get our art and music out today." Unpacking feelings of despondency when confronting the world at present, while Love Is Not Enough plumbed the heftiest, metalcore sludge of the Converge blueprint, Hum Of Heart offers vulnerability in place of aggression, panic in place of violence; a definitive ying-yang of Converge to soundtrack these hideous times.
