By the time these songs were recorded, the San Francisco scene as it was codified by acts such as Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Country Joe & The Fish was on its way out. By the time Country Weather finally hit their stride with original material, some studio recordings and a formidable live presence, they were already a few years behind the curve when the style was in vogue. This self titled archival release, finally unearthed in 2005, is split into a studio half and a live half.
The studio half contains some solidly played warm psychedelic folk rock with lots of country and some blues influences. The songwriting is sometimes uninspired, but Over and Over is compellingly written and definitely stands out above the rest of the studio recordings. The guitar work throughout the album is very warm and summery, and while usually psychedelic it is more folk-infused than many other San Francisco guitarists such as Sam Andrew of Big Brother and The Holding Company. The material is generally psychedelic with a few departures, including the pure blues rock New York City Blues (one of the lesser songs) and brief bluegrass instrumental Black Mountain Rag. The lead guitarist shows a good amount of variety in his playing through exploration of the different roots influences as well as some psychedelic freakouts. There are times where it sounds more reminiscent country rock bands of the 70s like the Outlaws.
The live half is the better one, featuring all the strengths of the studio half heightened even more by the extended jams. The studio versions for the songs found on both sides are essentially rendered useless by the live renditions, especially considering the surprisingly good sound quality for a live recording of an obscure band half a century ago. The eminent example of this is what appears to be their live centerpiece, Fly to New York, which features strong improvisation including a quieter section which greatly overpowers the relative weakness of the songwriting itself. Black Mountain Rag is another highlight of the set with its impressive bluegrass imbued guitar soloing, with the rest of the band also joining in increasing the energy towards the end. Country Weather is obviously in their element in the live setting, and it shows in their confidence and even occasional crowd participation as well as the improvisational factor. Wake Me Shake me definitely grows a little tiresome towards the end, but otherwise the performances remain interesting and the guitar soloing never overstays its welcome.
Recommended for fans of the late 60's San Francisco psychedelic scene as well as for people who like to feel like happy stoned hippies.
