Description

Prestige 7053 recording of MONK, featuring Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and Frank Foster.  Reissue of record with new cover, the concept for which was developed by graphic designer Reid Miles and realized by Andy Warhol.  Calligraphy is by Warhol's mother and first collaborator, Julia.  According to Andy Warhol: The Record Covers, 1949-1987, Catalogue Raisonne, this cover started "a mini-revolution.  Innovative and striking, combining graphic design with illustration, (it) was one of the first to be an authentic artwork in its own right, rather than a promotional vehicle."
