Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably their finest ever album, but all their early records are excellent. Always distinctive for style and sound with one of the finest vocalists from this period, John Fogerty, he rarely sounded better than on this wonderful issue. The very first song, the lengthy ‘Ramble Tamble’ gets the album off to a spectacular start, CCR get heavy and this song has the most wonderful riff that even Black Sabbath might have been proud of. A repetitive chord sequence that builds and then the lead guitar kicks in, this is great stuff. Also included are the magnificent ‘Up Around the Bend’ and ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain’, always sounding so much better on the original album rather than compilations and the penultimate tour de force, the long version of ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine’ clocking in at over 11 minutes. What an absolute classic this album is. This a fine example, a few gentle marks but hardly anything affects the actual music. The very thin and flimsy cover also in near excellent condition. Not for perfectionists, but many collectors will enjoy this wonderful album.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single matt format with both sides textured. Printed and made in England by the Upton Group and includes the plain white inner sleeve. The earliest covers were laminated, then changed to this textured matt type.

Cover Front: Very thin textured card, flimsy and ultimately delicate. This has a little patchy rubbing near the edges and fine rim rub near the top. A little quite fine creasing, but the ink ‘unbroken’, so it with modest visibility. The main area artwork is still impressive and clean as seen with no sticker issues, this matt version front could prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is very impressive with little to fault, the lack of ring wear is somewhat unusual. The first issue covers were also not laminated on the back.

Top Edge & Bottom Edges: Both are thin but remain largely straight with a little patchy rubbing, very little on the top, slightly more on the storage bottom one.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening or burring minimal, even as seen viewed end-on, this is guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this fragile edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, but quite thin, largely straight with a little compression in places, the ends are quite deeply pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn, also well centred on a narrow depth.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained, no bashes, any dinking tiny and very light.

Cover Summary: A difficult and considerable variant version of this famous cover, this soft textured sleeve could prove quite difficult to find much better, one to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain solid white unlined inner. Only very gentle discolouration of the paper, hardly any creasing and all the edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a few light, mainly surface marks and a couple of dulls on side two seen under light. Still a fine visual copy with nice shine and solidly pressed. The main factor is it still plays impressively with little unwanted – a tiny few ticks on the joining grooves and hardly anything unwanted on the actual music. Not for visual purists, but this record still delivers for sound and should please many fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb album plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Mostly beautiful clean sound with no tracking issues*. Avoiding any major mistreatment or abuse but a few gentle marks as stated above, but with barely any affect on the musical areas which remains clean and enjoyable. So little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic set. It could prove difficult to find a great deal better for audio quality and can be highly recommended unless ‘perfection’ is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
