Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A little above average.

Rarity: Much more elusive and quite rare on the original blue labels. Most seen are on the black format. This ultimate first pressing as confirmed by the inner sleeve codes (seen in close-up). Not as clean as my other two CCR albums on offer with some fine surface marks and mild cover wear. But importantly, the record plays superbly with the audio quality expected from such an early copy - for me, the most important factor of all.

Brief Info: Fourth album by the kings of ‘swamp rock’, this one is a true classic and up there with the very best in their wonderful early catalogue. Any evergreen gem featuring one of the most distinctive vocalists in rock, John Fogerty, this band could do little wrong at this time and were very popular. Always challenging to find in high-grading conditions. The cover always wears badly and the popular record so often played into submission. This is a splendid copy with a very decent cover with with some, mostly light edge rubbing and few light creases. The record has been played for sure but not excessively, there are no penetrating marks at all, just fine whispy surface hairlines and odd minor paper scuff – these have NO sound. Ten songs are featured and all are marvellous, the more well-known songs sounding so much better on the original album rather than compilations, this is an album to savour. The highlight apart from the classic single ‘Fortunate Son’ is the six-and-half-minute ‘Effigy’ which brings this stunning album to a perfect close.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: light and flimsy, no protection and textured, few are seen devoid of wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-), a single, unlaminated format with a lovely finely textured finish, the card is very soft and delicate and has a thin construction. This was printed and made in England this has no credits which is correct for the first made. The slightly later ones with the black Liberty records inside were printed by MacNeill Press Ltd. I know this to be true as I have a black Liberty copy in stock. The original uncredited cover has darker artwork too.

Cover Front & Back: I have to reitterate again just how fragile this cover is. Very soft, thin and bendy and immensely hard to find without some form of wear or damage. Both front and back are impressive, clean and attractive. Few real issues with barely any rubbing or significant marks. Most of any mild rubbing is seen near the very edges and only really on the front. A few light surface creases and no sticker marks or tears. The lack of any penetrating ringwear is always good news and somewhat unusual. Overall, both sides look very nice.

Top Edge: Mild rubbing, less than most I have seen for sure.

Bottom Edge: Light to light+ patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but quite thin and delicate, reasonably straight with few traces of compression. All the text is present – never take this for granted – with little wear. But there are a couple of small tone marks.

Corners: The corners have rubbed, mostly lightly and fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very respectably attractive all round example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better especially with a first pressed blue Liberty record inside. Actually wondered if I have under-graded this slightly. This attractive item should please many collectors but not the perfectionists of course.

The Inner: This copy includes the Polydor style, polylined inner which is date coded 1/0170 (the very first week of January 1970). This in very good condition but aged a little with consistent mild darkening and one moderately heavy corner crease. Still, the edges unsplit and with a super-neat window and secure lining. The date coding cannot be faked and try finding another with these codes, always definitive proof of ageing the copy on offer. Please see my inner close-up to confirm this detail.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Grading this EX(-) also does this lovely record scant justice. It has little more than ultra fine and faint surface marks, mostly hairlines that have no sound at all. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and heavily pressed on thick vinyl. A copy that has not been played too many times for sure, I am certain the fine surface marks are from enthusiastic cleaning with a cloth. Something I never do (these days), dry surface dust is gritty and rubbing it causes fine surface marks and also pushes the debris into the grooves causing crackle. Thus I use my professional Moth cleaning machine that removes the particles, not swishing them around and cause friction marks and noise. Washing a car prior to polishing is always the best idea, if not, paintwork gets similar fine marks, we have all seen them in sunlight. Visually not for the highly discerning, but if clean, first issue, ultra detailed sound is wanted, this delivers the business, big time.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce original blue labelled Liberty record plays above it’s visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The fine surface marks are ignored to just leave the most wonderful detailed, clan sound. Few copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played reasonably lightly and has been generally carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
