Dave Brubeck's 1960 "Time Out" provided popular acclaim and tremendous record sales for the period with over 250,000 copies sold.  Brubeck's unique use of time signatures other than the common 4/4 time resulted in an experiment that changed the Jazz scene forever and cemented Brubeck as one of the greats.  The Classic Records version of this venerable recording  was made "for the first time ever" directly from the original 3-track 1/2" analog session tapes directly to the lathe.  The release was cut on Classic's "ALL TUBE" cutting system by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood.  This Classic reissue has been hailed by many as the definitive version of "Time Out" on vinyl.  According to Michael Hobson, founder of Classic Records, who was at the mastering session that fateful day " Cutting from the session master tapes which Classic was famous for, gives a more vivid picture in sound of what happened in the studio than the production master tapes (copied from the session masters) that were used to cut the original releases because the session tapes are a generation earlier and have more information."  Hobson also recounts the difficulties in using the session master tapes: " We put the three tracks up on the tape machine and cued up a mint copy of an original 6-eye pressing for comparison.  The tape and the LP were started with about a second and a half delay between them for comparison which resulted in Bernie (Grundman) and I looking at each other and uttering "Uh Oh" simultaneously.  The LP sounded alive with the "Time Out" sparkle we had all come to know and love about the release while the tape sounded dull and uninteresting even though there was clearly a lot more detail on the tape.  Grundman stopped the tape and commented in his clever if slightly sarcastic way: "Well, I guess they added the ambience after the recording sessions"!  I asked naively, what we could do and his response was " we'll just have to add it back".  That set in motion the search for a "stereo" reverb plate similar to the one used at Columbia's 30th Street Studios which we found and had to have refurbished.  Once the plate was on line, the three track was started and reverb was added to the playback in the exact amount used during the mix down from the three track session masters to the two track production masters which is what made the recording "sparkle" on LP originally.  Now we had the magic that the reverb added but tons more detail and low level information because we were a generation back from the production masters used to cut the original and all subsequent pressing until then.  The results are nothing short of breathtaking - if you think you know "Time Out" then listen to the Classic version and you will be reduced to a quivering state of delight.  The highlight for me will always be on Take Five, the last track on side 1, when after an absolutely mesmerizing Joe Morello drum solo with Brubeck playing his constant vamp figure below, that sounds as if the drum kit is "in the room", a somewhat tentative Paul Desmond slides back in as if to say "what can I do after that".  When we finally cut the lacquers after weeks of delay with finding the reverb plate, I remember thinking while driving the parts to be immediately plated, Wow, I think this is going to turn out well.....and it did.
