So nice to come home to -- Music of Cole Porter, Rama Records RLP 5003, 1956.


Yeow. Now this is what I call a sexy cheesecake cover. The art director seems to have gone sort of crazy here: the collection of details is unreal. We have an apparently nude woman in a transparent negligee, which is barely covering her chest. We have her languid pose, as she puts down her book and looks at someone just out of the frame, presumably her hubby, who has just walked in the door. He is of course represented by the pipe in the ashtray on the coffee table, and oh, what's that just next to it? Her cigarette, with a ring of technicolor lipstick, where her lips were wrapped around it. Hmm. And as if that's not enough, we have the open box of chocolates, and can practically see her lipsticked mouth opening as she was decadently savoring these, lying there in her outrageous outfit and position, waiting for her husband to get home. Whoa! You can practically steam coming off the album cover. And the whole image is made even more exotic by the multicolored sexy mood lighting (note the blue/green on her feet and hair).


This incredible cheesecake cover image is in excellent condition, with NO ring wear, marred only by the initials "GB" written in the upper right hand corner (tastefully, in matching green), and a small dirt mark in the lower right corner. These barely interfere with one's enjoyment of the cover, however. It's almost impossible to take your eyes off the woman in the central image. The overall cover is in VG or VG- condition, due to extensive seam splits: the entire spine is split, and there is a two-inch seam split along the top near the opening. At the other end of the top seam there is a small 1/4" tear, near the upper left corner. The rest of the top seam and the entire bottom seam are in very good shape, the bottom with only very light wear. The back cover is bright white with minor discoloration along the opening edge and near the bottom. Large initials "GB" are written in green on the back cover near the top edge. The vinyl looks pretty rough at first glance, but surprisingly, plays quite well. Overall it is in VG/VG- condition, very listenable, but with mild surface noise always present. Very little distortion, though. There is one small groove jump on side one. The RAMA deep-groove labels are in VG+ condition, generally sharp and unworn, but with a number of obvious spindle marks, especially on side B.
The music is standard Broadway-style light classical instrumental arrangements of classic Cole Porter hits. For once, however, it is very well played and conducted, and the arrangements are interesting, despite what one might expect, given the album cover. Cyril Ornadel was a British conductor who later became quite well known, especially for television work and as music director for a number of hit musicals in London, including My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and The King and I, starting in the late 1950's. 


A prime example of vintage 50's cheesecake. What a cover! And a very rare record.
