The Quintet de Sade Local Group Makes Music 1968 Style Music styles may come and go, but the Quintet de Sade endures. The group came into existence three years ago when two Pasadena High School students, Dave Pritchard and Frank Blumer, decided to pool their talents on the guitar to play rock and roll. At first they called themselves "The Ravins," a play on words between the Ravens, a popular rhythm and blues group, and the British' verb "to rave," i.e. to freak out. Along ahout their senior year at PHS, the musical tastes of Dave and Frank began to change. In the beginning they had patterened themselves after groups like ths Beach Boys and the Ventures, but after coming into contact with jazz they started to play "cocktail" music like the Viiice Giraldi Trio, for instance. ' They also changed the name of the group to Quintet de Sade after hearing a Lalo Schifrin album entitled "Schifrin Sade," and noting the intriguing image conjured up by reference to the notorious Marquis de Sade. * Typical rock groups do not contain w o o d w i n d instruments, so along with the change in style they sought out a reed man.
