Campoli/Boult SXL 2026 ED1 Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto + Bruch: Scottish Fantasia
This is a rare Decca first pressing (or ED1) of this performance featuring Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The label on the disc has a wide silver band just above the centre and a circular groove in the vinyl approx 1cm in from the edge. On the rim of the label at 10 o’clock are printed the words “ORIGINAL RECORDING BY”. The matrix numbers engraved on the run-out are: ZAL-4055-4E & ZAL-4056-1E. The label includes “RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1958”. The outer sleeve is the original: lightweight cardboard, flip-back, laminated on the front. There is no blue/black border on the back. The sleeve notes are by Gordon Stewart dated 1959. Disc and outer sleeve are both made in England. The inner sleeve is period Decca ffss printed paper with polythene liner.
A check on other sites will show that you will probably need to pay over £300 for a ‘mint’ copy of this LP. Normally the classical LP market requires discs to be flawless; however, in view of this LP’s rarity you have an opportunity in this auction to bid for a copy with minor flaws – hence the very low starting bid.
Condition of Disc
The disc is flat and the centre labels are free of writing, sticky labels or marks There are only slight signs of ‘squirreling’ around the centre hole. The playing surfaces are glossy and clean, but on side 1 there are two faint point marks at 6 o’clock about 6cm in from the edge, resulting in a dozen or so faint ticks on playback. On side 2, there is a tiny surface mark about 2mm long at 6 o’clock, about 4 cm in, resulting in 5 or 6 faint ticks during playback. Overall, however, the sound reproduction is superb. There is negligible surface noise, even during the solo violin parts, and Campoli’s scintillating performance is not marred by noticeable loss of high frequencies.
Condition of Sleeve
No writing, tears or folds. There is slight ring wear front and back. The flip-back edges are secure and there is no sign of foxing or oxidation of glue. There is only minor shelf/handling wear at the corners and edges.
