“Can You Mend a Silver Thread?” by Sandstone (no label, SA 2911)

OK, here goes… it’s nearly impossible to describe how gorgeous this record is without it seeming like hype but...  Almost completely unknown Allentown, PA area private folk psych LP that’s head and shoulders above almost every other US folk psych record I’ve heard.  It’s hard to believe it’s not from the UK, as it’s instrumentation and compositional style remind me of Mellow Candle, Pentangle, Midwinter, etc.  Recorded in the early 70’s at a local studio that must have been quite high end, because the production quality is astounding.  Lyrically poetic, haunting primarily female vocals (by a young woman named Laurie Braunstein), and with entirely original compositions, this is every inch a mindblowing US private press.  From the cover to the instrumentation (mandolin, flute, recorder, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, electric bass, drums and stunning acoustic guitar playing) to the deeply strange and lovely lyrics, this may be my all-time fave US folk psych private.  I feel absolutely justified in this seemingly hyped description; this record is totally astounding.  “Lonely Hunters,” “Farewell Valley” and the title track are probably the truest US folk psych I’ve yet found.    

Condition: Cover = VG+ (No ring wear, very slight edge wear, no splits or writing, just a bit of rubbing and a few age spots here & there… conservatively graded)/ Record = EX (No spindle marks, shiny vinyl, a few slight marks which don’t sound, three or four clicks at the end of song 1 side 2, plays wonderfully)

PACKAGING/SHIPPING/POSTAGE: As I’m VERY careful about keeping LPs in their described condition, I ship all LPs in custom LP mailers and use filler pads.  I pack the disc with the inner-sleeve placed behind cover (both in a plastic slipcover) to prevent seam splitting in transit.

Postage for 1-2 LPs within USA: Media Mail = $4.00 or Priority Postage = $6.50, each additional LP add $2.00 (per LP).

Insurance is optional, but any uninsured package is the Buyer’s responsibility (At Your Own Risk) and I cannot refund lost or damaged packages.  US Insurance rates are as Follows: 0-$50.00 = $1.30; $50.01 - $100.00 = $2.20; $100.01 - $200.00 = $3.20; $200.01 and Higher = $4.20.  Overseas, please inquire.
