Description
Formed in 1988 in Buffalo, New York, Cannibal Corpse became one of the most influential and enduring bands in death metal. Known for blistering speed, technical riffing, and horror-themed lyrics and artwork, they helped define the Florida-associated death metal sound after relocating to Tampa in the early 1990s. Across a long career and many lineup changes, the band has remained a touchstone for extremity in metal while maintaining a fiercely loyal global fanbase.
Released in 1992 as the opening track and lead single from the album Tomb of the Mutilated, “Hammer Smashed Face” is arguably Cannibal Corpse’s signature song. It showcases the band’s rapid tremolo picking, pummeling blast beats, and guttural vocals (then by Chris Barnes). Musically, the song is a landmark of early ’90s death metal intensity, and culturally it became emblematic of the genre’s confrontational aesthetics—frequently cited as one of the definitive death metal tracks of all time.
