Description
THE CAPSTAN PLAYERS – MILTON ACADEMY
(Trans Radio 990)
UBER RARE 1967? garage LP by Boston rockers THE CAPSTAN PLAYERS from Milton Academy, Massachusetts.
Players include Paul Donsanto (guitarist in a late incarnation of Beacon Street Union), Doug Hendren (Musical Scalpel), John "Suss" Sussewell (drummer), John Hagerty, and Carter Manny. Tracks include covers of songs by the Remains, Richard and the Young Lions, The Critters and Standells.
In generic white cardboard jacket, as issued. Jacket has soiling, some splits on seams, name in ink upper right, not very pretty.
Record is beautiful, VG++/Excellent by the strictest Goldmine grading standards.
Initially I graded side one Mint minus with a few faint marks; side two with one small mark at end of track 2 (shown in photo) plus a few sleeve scuffs and superficial marks, just shy of Mint minus, BUT I HAVE DECIDED TO REVISE THIS GRADING after inspecting the record under better light.
I've scrutinized the record multiple times using different light sources (direct sunlight, halogen etc) and have concluded that VG++/Excellent is my call (again, using the strictest Goldmine standards). I took more photos with a better camera to try to better illustrate the condition of the record. The photos are all unenhanced, taken in different light situations. The most faded image was taken in direct full sunlight and shows the flaws in the worst possible way. In regular room lighting most flaws are not visible. No marks are perceptible to touch.
OK - I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO LISTEN TO THIS - ADMITTEDLY THRU A CRAP SET UP - BRAND NEW AUDIO TECHNICA AT-PL120 TURNTABLE THRU A BOSE WAVE. GENERALLY PLAYS VERY WELL, WITH ONLY A FEW OCCASIONAL CLICKS AND POPS, BUT SOMETIMES SOUNDS A LITTLE CRUNCHY AND MUFFLED - I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS THE WAY IT WAS RECORDED OR THE WAVE OR THE RECORD OR WHAT. I HATE THE WAY ANYTHING SOUNDS ON A WAVE !This is a very rare record that hardly ever comes up for sale, especially in such great condition. Last time I can find this listed for sale was back in 2008, when a VG minus copy sold for $250. Don't wait another four years for the next copy to turn up!
