Doc at the RadarStation is theeleventh studio album by American rock band CaptainBeefheart and the Magic Band, released in August 1980 by VirginRecords. The album cover was painted by Don Van Vliet. It was placed at numberforty-nine on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Album Covers. Although about half of the album's songs are based on old musicalideas, Mike Barnes states that "most of the revamping work built onskeletal ideas and fragments ... would have mouldered away in the vaultshad they not been exhumed and transformed into full-blown, totally convincingnew material". The tracks "A Carrot is as Close as a Rabbit Getsto a Diamond", "Flavor Bud Living" and "Brickbats"were originally intended and recorded for the proposed album Bat ChainPuller but it wasn't released due to Frank Zappa owning themaster tapes as DiscReet cofounders Herb Cohen and Zappa feudedover the production of the album, because Cohen funded the production withZappa's royalty checks.

John French rejoins the Magic Bandfor this album. He plays guitar on all songs, plus bass guitar on "Sheriffof Hong Kong", and drums on the tracks "Ashtray Heart" and"Sheriff of Hong Kong" and marimbaon "Making Love To A Vampire With A Monkey On My Knee". Don Van Vliet (/væn ˈvliːt/; born Don Glen Vliet; January15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American singer, songwriter,multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist best known by the stage name CaptainBeefheart. Conducting a rotating ensemble called Captain Beefheartand His Magic Band, known separately as "The Magic Band", herecorded 13 studio albums between 1964 and 1982. His music blended elementsof blues, free jazz, rock, and avant-garde compositionwith idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist wordplay, and hiswide vocal range. Known for his enigmatic persona, Beefheartfrequently constructed myths about his life and was known to exercise an almostdictatorial control over his supporting musicians. Although he achievedlittle commercial success, he sustained a cult following as a "highlysignificant" and "incalculable" influence on an arrayof new wave, punk, and experimental rock artists.

An artistic prodigy in hischildhood, Van Vliet developed an eclectic musical taste during his teenyears in Lancaster, California, and formed "a mutuallyuseful but volatile" friendship with musician Frank Zappa, with whomhe sporadically competed and collaborated. He began performing with hisCaptain Beefheart persona in 1964 and joined the original Magic Band line-up,initiated by Alexis Snouffer, the same year. The group released theirdebut album Safe as Milk in 1967 on Buddah Records. After beingdropped by two consecutive record labels they signed to Zappa's StraightRecords, where they released 1969's Trout Mask Replica; the album wouldlater rank 58th in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 500greatest albums of all time. In 1974, frustrated by lack of commercialsuccess, he pursued a more conventional rock sound, but the ensuing albums werecritically panned; this move, combined with not having been paid for a Europeantour, and years of enduring Beefheart's abusive behavior, led the entire bandto quit.

Beefheart eventually formed a newMagic Band with a group of younger musicians and regained critical approvalthrough three final albums: Shiny Beast (1978), Doc at the RadarStation (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982). Van Vliet made fewpublic appearances after his retirement from music in 1982. He pursued a careerin art, an interest that originated in his childhood talent for sculpture, anda venture which proved to be his most financially secure.His expressionist paintings and drawings command high prices, andhave been exhibited in art galleries and museums across the world. VanVliet died in 2010, having suffered from multiple sclerosis for manyyears.
