These records are auto-coupled. The records are nice with lots of original gloss and grade overall VG+ condition: Side1 is VG condition; Side2, Side3 and Side4 are VG+ condition. The jacket has some ring wear but not bad. None of the seams have splits. Overall the jacket grades Very Good+. Includes the 2 original Straight Records company original black inner sleeves even though they have side splits. Overall a very nice set for this very rare label variation. Good Luck.
Trout Mask Replica is the third studio album by American Rock band CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and his Magic Band, released as Straight Records' First Double Album on June 16, 1969. It Combined elements of Rythum & Blues, Garage Rock and Blues including Free Jazz and Avant-Garde approaches, and other genres of American Music, this album is regarded as an important work of Experimental Music and Art Rock. It was ranked number 60 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 2012 listing "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" and appears on many such Greatest LP Lists.
Most of the album was produced by Mr. Frank Zappa and was recorded in March 1969 at Whitney Studios in Glendale, California, following eight months of intense rehearsals at a small rented communal house in South Los Angeles. Many hardships occurred during the 8 months of 'super intense' rehearsals at the hand of Don Van Vliet.... once a week one person was allowed to go out of the house to purchase the week's groceries which mainly consisted of rice and ice water. The lineup of the Magic Band at this time consisted of Bill Harkleroad(a.k.a. Zoot Horn Rollo) and Jeff Cotton on guitar, Mark Boston(a.k.a. Rockette Morton) on bass guitar, Victor Hayden(a.k.a. The Mascara Snake) on bass clarinet, and John French(a.k.a. Drumbo) on Drums and Percussion. Don Van Vliet(a.k.a. Captain Beefheart) played several brass and woodwind instruments, including saxophone, natural horn and musette and contributed most of the vocal parts, while Frank Zappa and members of the band provided occasional vocals and narration. The well-rehearsed Magic Band recorded all instrumental tracks for the album in a single six-hour recording session!!!! while Don Van Vliet's vocal and horn tracks were laid down over the next few days. Trout Mask Replica sold poorly upon its initial release in the United States, where it failed to peak in any charts. It was more successful in the United Kingdom, where it spent a week at number 21 on the UK Albums Chart.
In recent years, Trout Mask Replica has been widely regarded as the masterpiece of Van Vliet's musical career, as well as an important influence on many subsequent artists. Its highly unconventional musical style, which includes polyrhythm, multi-octave vocals, and polytonality, continues to polarize audiences and has given the album a reputation as one of the most challenging recordings in the 20th century musical canon.
