redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP from EMI (EL 27 0560 1, English pressing / DMM · Direct Metal Mastering, large dog semi-circle label, DDD stereo) features Carlos Bonell in a masterly program of 20th Century music for guitar, recorded at Henry Wood Hall, London, on 3-4 April 1986 (producer: Andrew Keener / engineer: Mike Clements).
The exact contents are as follows:
William Walton: Five Bagatelles
Manuel de Falla: Homenaje “Le tombeau de Claude Debussy”
Benjamin Britten: Nocturnal after John Dowland Op. 70
Alberto Ginastera: Sonata Op. 47
This is extraordinary playing by any measure and can withstand the most exalted comparisons, be it with Bream, Wililams, Sevogia, et al.
Wrote John W. Duarte in his review for the December 1987 issue of The Gramophone:
“The common thread that runs through this programme, though not declared in its title title, is that each item is the only solo-guitar work written by a distinguished composer who went to his grave unable to play the instrument, and of prime importance in the repertory of the guitar. All have been recorded several times before, a fact that is not evident in the current catalogue, though never previously grouped together on one record. Given these facts, it is important that the quality of the performances should justify the heavy sales it is likely to attract; happily, this is the case.
“Bonell gets things off to a high-spirited start in the first of Walton's Bagatelles, though the awkwardness of a few chord-changes is audible, as also in the fifth of the set; though in evidence, his penchant for exaggerated staccato is not too obtrusive. Falla's homenaje is taken a little slower than the marked crotchet = 60 and, though it is never allowed to drag funerally, emotive disturbances of the tempo (beyond those signalled by the composer) tend to conceal the dance-like character of the work. The first note of the first variation in Britten's Nocturnal (''musingly'') is a sort of pons asinorum (one does not 'muse' with intense vibrato as some are wont to attempt) and it is comfortably crossed by Bonell, who goes on to give a most sensitive account of the work, one in which he is not afraid to put his own personal stamp, e.g. the phrasing of the etouffees in the Passacaglia and the climactic passage leading to the final appearance of Dowland's original lute-song. The Sonata of Ginastera is 'fortunate' in already having four excellent recordings; here is the fifth. This is very much Bonell's territory and he patently enjoys it—even though the scherzo is a little short of urgency and impishness.”
“This is by far the best solo recording Bonell has yet made, marked with real virtuosity and a striking range of well-applied tone-colour. The recorded sound is bright, clear and full of presence.”
There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by the late guitarist, composer, and critic John W. Duarte. The striking cover photo was taken by Chris Yates.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears virtually as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the jacket remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
