Description

For sale here is a set of the three Mondo vinyl editions of the soundtracks from Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. This classic trilogy of games for the Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System introduced kids of the 1980s to the genre of horror in games and are some of the earliest video games in that genre. Besides being some of the only "scary" games available to kids east of the Pacific in the 1980s, the Castlevania games were renowned for their fantastic soundtracks, which are on full display here.

As amazing as this music is, the packaging on these releases is truly stunning. I would say these albums are suitable for framing, but I'd be sorry to think about anyone choosing any of the three possible configurations for display and closing off the others--the fronts, reverses, and gatefolds of all three albums are fantastic, as you can see from my photos. As an avid fan of this series growing up--and now!--I have to say that one of my favorite details is the recreation of the map to each game that's presented on the gatefold. In particular, I love the 3D kind of look of the map to Dracula's Curse, which I think is reminiscent of the maps of Strahd's castle in the Dungeons and Dragons Ravenloft module. That may seem like a deep cut, but it makes sense--the Dracula on the Castlevania II cover art is a straight pull from the cover of that RPG book (Google it!). Anyway, it's a cool way to present that map, which may be my favorite version of the castle from the entire series (seriously).

Castlevania I and III are pressed in black vinyl, while Castlevania II is pressed in "blue with green splatter" vinyl--see the photo for an idea of what that looks like.

These are pre-owned and very gently used. The covers are in fantastic shape and will look amazing wherever you choose to keep them. The discs have no flaws and will play beautifully for you. While removing the shrinkwrap makes it impossible to keep the obi strips wrapped on the spines (and thus they are not pictured, except in the picture of the CVII vinyl itself), I've held on to those and am including those with these albums.

The latter two albums have both the NES and Famicom versions of the soundtracks. In general, the Famicom version is at least slightly superior, with more precise instrumental emulation. In my opinion, the advantages of the Famicom version of Castlevania III are particularly impressive, as great as the NES version sounds. On the other hand, even though I can see how the digital chimes and whatnot set the Famicom version of Castlevania II apart, I do have a personal preference for the NES version. However, both versions are great, and each one has its charms, which is why Mondo put both here.
As with all of my items, this comes from a smoke-free home. My family and I just completed a move, and I'm paring down my collections in order to make space in our new home. I do try to cooperate on reasonable offers, so feel free to get in touch with one if you are interested. Of course, please contact me if you have any questions. Shipping is free, or if you like, included in the price of the albums, so please take that into consideration as you're weighing whether to buy or not. Have a great day!

Sorry for all the stars on CVIII--the music in the second half of that game is pure gold, and the first half is no slouch. As a brief note, I could have sworn that my copy of Castlevania II was missing Bloody Tears, but having heard others' vinyl rips and having counted the tracks on the disc (unfortunately, my needle needs replacing, and I haven't gotten around to that in a while, so I can't check first-hand), I have to guess that I was incorrect.
