Description

Cat Stevens at the height of his musical creativity.....'Tea For The Tillerman' and to a (slightly) lesser extent, 'Teaser and The Firecat'  remain his most cherished and  critically acclaimed albums. They were released in 1970/71 and considering the quality of the tunes on both these albums and the length of time it takes for current "superstars" to release an album of mostly forgetable tunes, this is nothing short of extraordinary.  Despite immensely popular folk-rock songs that have become international standards, Cat Stevens is the ultimate reluctant pop star. In fact, Stevens was turned off by the pop star life and when he resurfaced in 1970 with 'Mona Bone Jakon', the music was more developed and the lyrics more mature and sensitive. Even though he'd had a few hits, 'Tea For The Tillerman' blasted Stevens into international superstardom. "Wild World", Where Do The Children Play", "Hard Headed Woman", and others made Stevens an album-rock radio staple. The album's cartoon cover art (which Stevens himself painted) and the innocence expressed in the songs were perfect for the flower-child ethos. The copy I am offering is a 1st New Zealand pressing from 1970(SIL-934028) on the Pink Island label.  It is  really a fine copy with very little to fault and though not quite as sonically impressive as the 1st UK pressing, it comes in at a close 2nd with superb detail in the acoustic guitars and strings especially. 

 

Condition of Lp Jacket: Near Mint....almost perfect with great lamination and only some minor wear to the corners. Record shop sticker can be seen and is neatly placed within the inner gatefold. The cover's pinched spine is in beautiful condition.

Condition of Record: Excellent(minus)....In fact, the album plays mostly Near Mint except for the song "Into White" (a few inoffensive light "ticks) and the song "Father and Son" (some "ticks" during the song's first 15 seconds ONLY)  So all in all, an exceptional copy and quite rare as a 1st New Zealand pressing. The word "STERLING" and initials "LH" (Lee Hulko) are seen in the deadwax on Side 2.
