Wallace Woodworth The carols and Christmas music here presented were recorded in the Memorial Church at Harvard University, and are drawn from Carol Services traditional at Harvard for fifty years. These services were started by Dr. Archibald T. Davison, University Organist and Choirmaster, and Professor Edward C. Moore, Chairman of the Board of Preachers, and have continued without a break since 1910. Although the University Choir at Harvard is a chorus of men’s voices, the “Carols” have from the start had the benefit of “the young ladies of Radcliffe.” Ornate and showy “Christmas music” has been left aside for the homely simplicities and the deeper and more universal spirit of the carols, old and new. Where words and music unite to sing of the joy, the wonder and the mystery of Christ- mas, both singers and listeners participate alike. The eighteen carols here presented are a few representatives of the vast literature of German, English and American carols. It is hoped to include on a later record French, Spanish, Bohemian, and Czech carols, which constitute another large segment in our heritage of Christmas folk music. Possibly the oldest of the carols on this record is the Christmas Song Personent Hodie, of which the words and melody come from "Piae Cantiones,” 1582. The setting'by Gustav Holst is a fine ex- ample of the skill and taste of the best English composers of the twentieth century. Vaughan Williams’ unison setting of Joseph. Dearest Joseph reveals the ancient melody on which Gallus composed an antiphonal motet Resonet in Eaudibus, and Erhard Bodenschatz an imaginative part song full of sentiment and tenderness. The Bodenschatz version is taken from “Harmoniae Angelicae,” 1608. The “Joseph” melody is the basis for these two highly contrasting settings of the late Rennaissance, and has been the inspiration for a whole series of German Christmas pieces, including Brahms’ wonder ful song for alto, viola and piano, the Qeistliches IViegenlied, Op. 91, No. 2. 3n dulci jubilo, a German carol of uncertain origin, illustrates in a charming wray one of the characteristics of many old carols, the mixture of Latin and the vernacular. In the original, German phrases alternated with conventional Latin lines. In Dr Davison’s setting for women’s voices we have used the combination of English and Latin Other carols and chorales drawn from the vast treasure house of German literature include the Praetorius setting of Eo, How a Rose E'er Blooming and the two Bach chorales, Qood Wews from Heaven and Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, both from the Christ- mas Oratorio of 1734. Also in the German tradition is Jhe Hunter, from the “Songs of Mary” by Brahms. This is an original piece with no specific Christmas melody as its source; but its simple piety and touching sentiment are altogether in the spirit of the German carols Finally, there is Silent Wight by Franz Gruber, which has become not only a national carol but also a universal tradition. On the English side, there are the well-known carols, Deck the Hall and Jhe Holly and the Ivy, and two Wassail Songs, one from Yorkshire and the other from Gloucestershire, set by Vaughan Wil- liams. These four represent the secular side of the English tradition with its delightful evocation of the Christmas landscape, homely in- terior and exterior scenes, the wassailers, and all the happy secular observances mingled with the central spiritual theme “when Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ.” This deeper theme predominates in Vaughan Williams’ beautiful unison setting of “On Christmas Night ” A Virgin Unspotted is the only indigenous American carol on this record. It comes from the so-called American primitive composer, William Billings, and it appeared in his Singing Master's Assistant published in Boston in 1778. The familiar carols Joy to the IPorld and Jdeste Jideles have both found their widest acceptance in Amer- ica although in each case the origin was probably European. Joy to the World is supposed to have some remote source in Handel but the setting universally used was made by Lowell Mason, the great Boston schoolmaster in music (1792-1872). Jldeste Jideles, though of unknown authorship probably in the 17th century, has been widely sung in both England and America and is indeed, like Silent Wight, one of the truly universal carols.
