From 1953 the ghost of Clifford Brown is still smokin’ on this appropriately titled “Memorial Album”. It blows your mind to listen to the incredible high-speed precision, melodic ideas, impeccable and original bright warm tone; fluffless execution and articulation that made this young man a worthy legend who would be emulated by a generation.  More remarkable still is the fact this this level of mastery is being executed by a 23 year old young man during the two sessions recorded here. This album features the legendary “Brownie Speaks” which startled the jazz world and announced the arrival of a new and original trumpet stylist.  There are two groups each performing five tunes; a sextet with the very underrated altoist Gigi Gryce, Pre-Monkster Charlie Rouse, MJQ’s John Lewis in a rare Blue Note small group appearance with his contrabass MJQ collaborator Percy Heath and stirring the pots as always Buhaina is on top of his identifiable chk, chk, chk, hi-hat and press rolls. The other group here is a quintet with Lou Donaldson displaying his Bird derived alto prowess but the real kicker here for me is the rare Blue Note appearance of Elmo Hope whose original approach was an amalgam of Monk and Powell. Hope shortly moved west to the L.A. jazz scene and was not often heard in a New York group context for example here with Percy heath and from Miles’ band at the time “Philly Joe” in a commanding aggressive role. Each group sounds different but Brownie remains dominant in both groups; strong, clean, original; a young musical genius on display.
