Description
This is the record version of the fourth set produced by Mosaic. The layout is not the one they settled on. The back cover of the booklet is gray and carries an address in Santa Monica, CA although the lp labels are the familiar half-checkered Stamford, CT. The booklet is eight pages. There are 49 tracks from five different bands on six different dates: two in June 53, another in Aug 53, all NYC studio recordings, a live date at Birdland Jan 54, and two LA studio dates from Jul and Aug 54. One date produced an album initially under J J Johnson's name, another Brownie co-led with Lou Donaldson, another under Art Blakey, and two under Brownie's name. Personnel is all star, including Percy and Jimmy Heath, Kenny Clarke, Gigi Gryce, Zoot Sims, Horace Silver, John Lewis, Elmo Hope, Shelly Manne, and Charlie Rouse. And more. Most tracks are under five minutes, but some go as longer, as much as ten on The Way You Look Tonight. Half a dozen tracks are Brownie's compositions, and Horace Silver, Gigi Gryce, Elmo Hope, and Charlie Parker are well represented, there are some standards too. Sterling music on abstemiously played vinyl! I used pencil to identify and bracket each session on the page with song titles then I erased the marks. There are ten alternate takes. Brownie's widow, LaRue, wrote the introductory remembrance.
