Background Information

  Click on the link to see the original information source: - Cool Music For A Hot Night Around 1948-9, a chap called Ron Davies started a new, albeit very small, independent label in the U.K. Great interest in the Jazz and Blues of the ‘Classic Period’ (i.e. the 1920s) had been growing world-wide since the late 1930s. Cruelly and catastrophically traumatised by the 1939-45 War, the surviving populations turned, at last, to New Things (or indeed, the Revival of Old, Worthy Things) in order to help forget the immediate past.

Ron Davies’ record label may have envisaged both the reissue of past performances for the 1920s and the issue of newly-recorded material right from the start. Certainly, both these things it did. The label was called Tempo and as usual here at that time, had its pressings made by Decca. Decca seemed to be quite prepared to do relatively small-run custom pressings for minor labels, while the mighty EMI either considered it below their dignity to do so, or somehow inherently resented the right of other to have their own record label. Or maybe their custom pressing prices were just too high anyhow?

In any case, I believe Tempo began with the ‘A’ series, which was devoted to issuing contemporary (or near-contemporary) recordings of ‘Revivalist’ material.

The first issues set a very high standard indeed! Tempo A1, A2 and A3 were drawn from a series of wonderfully inspirational and creative sessions organised by Charles LaVere and recorded in Hollywood starting in July 1944. These had been originally issued on his own ‘Jump’ label. A hand-picked personnel including Matty Matlock, Billy May and Joe Venuti provided integritous, lyrical ‘Jazz without Walls’ (to borrow a phrase from Dick Sudhalter). Indeed, popular as these discs were at the time, it is only with the lapse of many decades that their ‘pureness’ and true value can be properly appreciated.
