CRYPTIC GUIDE TO THE RESIDENTS
This is the collector's edition of the 1986 Cryptic Guide To The Residents book, with limited edition green vinyl one-sided 7" single of "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers" & silk screened orange glow in the dark cover. This original version of "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers" is longer than the one that ended up on "Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses" 4 cd set; This is the only place that you can find the song in its full glory!
This book profiles The Residents' career up to the middle of 1986. The collectors' edition of 500 copies (THIS auction version) featured a glow-in-the-dark silk screened cover printed on fluorescent paper stock and contained the 1-sided single "Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers". The cover art is by Mark Mothersbaugh, and contains The True Story of The Residents by Matt Groening, along with a great Ralph Records discography with pics of The Residents, Snakefinger, Renaldo and The Loaf, Yello, MX80 Sound, Tuxedomoon and others, 64 pages in all. The regular edition of 1500 copies of this book has a three different coloured covers (500 each of yellow, pink and light green) and no single.
This version was compiled and edited by Dave Warden, based on "The True Story of The Residents" by Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons, Futurama, and Life in Hell). Portions of it were taken from "The Official WEIRD Book of The Residents" edited by Philip Culp and Mimi King in 1979.
ABOUT THE INCLUDED SINGLE:
This specially pressed, one-sided single contains the soundtrack to The Residents' video production Earth vs. The Flying Saucers, which was adapted from the 1956 movie of the same title. This vinyl release was manufactured for exclusive inclusion inside the first edition copies of The Cryptic Guide To The Residents, which were published in the summer of 1986.
No master tape previously existed for the soundtrack; The Residents composed music for the production, transferred this music onto video tape, and added sound effects one layer at a time until the project was completed. In 1986, an audio copy of the video master was made and then used as the sound master for this release. The label artwork for the single was designed by Pore-Know Graphics.
EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS was pressed on transparent green vinyl and packaged in plain white sleeves. They were attached to the back covers of the first edition copies of The Cryptic Guide To The Residents, and were not offered for sale as a seperate release.
NOTE: cover has scuff marks and slight signs of age. Booklet and single are pristine. See photos for details.
