& THE EXCELS

Some rockabilly records fall well outside the usual norm of being recorded in the Elvis era (1954-1961). This is one such platter and was on the streets in January of 1965! This is one killer-diller single that has everything you'd want out of a rockabilly record; a thumpin' beat, a southern-drawl on the singer, and a knife edge guitar that just won't quit. It's clear that these guys have been listening to the Beach Boys and Dick Dale, but still prefer the good ol' rock and roll.

Danny Goode & The Excells first got together in December of '63. They were James & Danny Goode, Roger Bennett and Gibson Harris. They ere all from the Colin County area, that's just north of Dallas. With a connection to Gibson's Discount Center (a chain of discount stores) they got the chance to record out at Clifford Herring's studio in Ft.Worth.

They worked on this record for four and a half hours, an came up with four songs, two of which made it to this single. Did you notice it's on the Gibson label? The store was supporting the guys with recording costs, and stocked the 45 in their record section. The songs here are their original "Let's Dance" and a southern-fried version of the Rufus Thomas tune "Walking The Dog."

By the time of this record, the members were all between 19 and 22 years old. It's not clear ho this first came out bearing ONLY Danny Goode's name, but that was quickly fixed and all subsequent 45s had the name The Excels.

The band had a record release party on January 9, 1965 at the Gibson's Discount Center in McKinney, Texas. Along with this record you get a reproduction of the original flyer for this even that also contains some detailed bios of the band.
