Label/Format: RCA Victor early orange format with matt surfaces that have a gentle hint of texturing. These have distinct ridges, this is a CBS contract pressing which probably explains why this copy is so well pressed, it plays little short of perfect.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. Reasonably light, but the most important factor bar none – this is SUPERBLY pressed and offers fantastic audio quality throughout.

Rarity: Moderate, Bowie’s albums post-Ziggy all sold well. This a rarer copy pressed by CBS and offering fantastic sound quality, that is something that is never guaranteed for mass-produced records on this label.

Brief Info: Bowie fans must have waited with baited-breath for this one. A new band line-up and first new album post-Ziggy after the Pinups covers album, and a very fine one it was. The glam period had not disappeared completely but this was the first album since 1969 not to feature any of the ‘Spiders from Mars’ backing musicians. This was a concept album and most songs would not have been out of place on his earlier works. This a more elusive CBS pressing for RCA, probably due to anticipated demand, this copy on offer is a beauty and appears hardly even played, with sound of this quality, it should please most fans of this legendary iconic artist.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated, gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, printed in England, uncredited. Later covers had various British company printing credits.

Cover Front: Superb, with deep, unfaded colour and freshness, any blemishes bordering on minuscule, and no sticker issues that blight many. Any creasing tiny and faint, this is the best original I have seen for ages.

Cover Back: Practically the same again, note the lack of printing credits and ring wear. Both faces are superb and are seldom seen as such.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again lovely deep colour retained with little to fault again, the odd minor gentle crease.

Top Edges: Thick and straight with hardly any rubbing, any traces little and light.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with just rubbing to the back, right end. Anything else gentle and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge – later ones do not have this – this is practically as-made. The back opening edges are clean, mostly sharp with any thickening/burring tiny and little, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Again superb: solid, thick and straight with no compression. Folded square, so the edges are near flush. Tiny rub traces to the ends with all the text present and practically perfect as seen.

Corners: Only very small tip rubs with excellent shape retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A fantastic all-round example of this wear-prone original uncredited cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This classic Bowie item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a basic plain white unlined inner that has little to fault. Clean, still quite fresh, with minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed by CBS. A much more reliable company for quality at this time, this copy offers the very best sound I have heard. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minimal and faint, even as viewed critically under bright light. This pressed on pure vinyl with no mottling or impurities seen, thus it plays with fantastic sound with no distortion, inherent pressing or tracking issues*. Visually an exceptional ‘Diamond Dogs’ to please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb, clean early issue record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – another high class Bowie production that sounds fantastic. Like other albums of his, this can be let down by variable pressing quality, but this one excels. The ridges on the labels and stampers on the run out areas of the disc prove this is manufactured by CBS, and they seldom disappoint. Any surface sounds hardly registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a high-intensity album. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored inside a protective cover, and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest recommendation – a ‘keeper-copy’ for most fans, and indeed it could prove a significant upgrade for some.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
