All boxes signed for in quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and traceable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Posting to Russia: Yes, I do post to Russia. But delivery can take up to 4 to 6 weeks from the UK. So please be patient. I will submit a tracking number to the winning bidder, and when the packet arrives there it can be followed online using the Russian post website.

Label Conditions: Both almost as-made, ultra clean, fresh and attractive with no spindle marks. Any crinkle purely within manufacture and quite common on matt RCA labels. Another gem from a collection of hardly played records and cover-protected.

Rarity: Moderate, less easy fully complete with in high visual and playing conditions. As many fans and collectors know, this is another challenging album for clean sounding vinyl. Many have considerable crackle and even pressing noises/distortion. This copy plays very well indeed with little unwanted and includes the full original packaging.

Brief Info: The eleventh studio album and regarded as one of Bowie’s most influential ever. It was the first of the famed ‘Berlin Trilogy’ recorded with Brian Eno. Far more experimental, even avant-garde with inspiration from the Krautrock scene of the early 1970s. This sound was developed still further on ‘Heroes’ and then ‘Lodger’. There were hints of this on his previous album ‘Station to Station’. Initially opinion was smewhat divided on this new direction, many found the music difficult, even bleak. Some were disappointed by the lack of vocals on side two and felt dissatisfied. But as the shock of this new sound subsided, this album is now regarded as a true classic and a brave issue. Personally, I regard it as one of his finest ever, being less commercial and dark. A wonderful work as were the next two in the series. This is a lovely copy as well, it includes the stickered front and rear cover in very impressive condition, this never easy and prone to all forms of wear. Also included is the song credit sheet insert plus the rare David Bowie official international fan club folded sheet. Most importantly, the record appears hardly played and plays impressively well with little unwanted. That never to be dismissed lightly, my play-grade for this was very enjoyable.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with the large rectangular sticker on the back listing the song titles, also the hit single ‘Sound & Vision’ promotional sticker on the front. This was omitted from later versions. The back also has the original ‘ZZ’ price code that was utilised at time of issue. Printed and made in England by Garrodprint Ltd, includes the December 1976 date-coded RCA white inner sleeve, also the song credits insert sheet and prized fan club folded sheet – all elements of this set are guaranteed original.

Cover Front: The aspect of this cover is the lack of fading to the front and back, the orange colour is massively prone to light issues which, apart from a hint on the spine fold, it has avoided. This front is superb, cover-protection has again played its part and this surface has little to fault at all. No creasing, rubbing, clean and fresh with deep rich vibrant colour. The single promotional sticker, which is scarce, hardly aged, still mainly clean and certainly never picked at or removed. One of the very best fronts I have seen to date for this first issue cover.

Cover Back: Firstly the sticker that again only came with early copies, this one is pristine mint. The lack of rubbing, picking or edge grubbiness around it are all major pluses. The solid orange surface has minimal blemishes and no creasing, there is hardly a rim trace to be seen, let alone ring wear which this often suffers. Blemishes?, well one tiny chip near the bottom edge, one tiny pressing ‘spot’ and light, very patchy traces of adhesive smearing also near the bottom that has gently touched the RCA credit near the centre. This blemish purely within manufacture and quite common on many covers, I do not really count this in my grading as it was like this from new. Quickly manufactured covers for an expected high-selling album seldom are pristine. Finding this back or front with nothing to fault whatsoever will prove close to impossible being honest and few will be found better.

Top Edge: Perfectly straight and unworn, exceptional and mint with no fading.

Bottom Edge: As above, storage edges on unlaminated covers seldom survive like this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening minuscule as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine as seen, being ultra critical, the bottom may have faded on the actual crease line, but that is not certain as it’s so straight and clinical. The actual surface is immaculate and retains impressive totally natural deep colour to match the cover’s front. Solid, straight with barely any hint of compression, all text and graphic in supreme condition. Finding the spine surface without natural light fading is actually difficult.

Corners: All corners are practically mint with barely any trace of tip rubbing. Perfect crisp mint shape retained with no knocks or dinks. Again rarely seen as such.

Cover Summary: Knowing this cover well, I know this rarely survives without ring wear, rubbing and often major fading, this one has largely avoided all with any blemishes purely in manufacture. Fresh with deep colour and hardly worn, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): an RCA imprinted white inner sleeve, these were not lined. Two pristine window circles, uncreased and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Only marked down from full Mint as there is a gentle hint of discolouration to the white paper to politely remind of age – this being very critical. This is date-coded and was manufactured in December 1976, the code being 12-76.

The Song Credits Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): printed on both sides. One light top corner crease and a faint trace opposite, minimal traces elsewhere, then practically as-made, this is guaranteed original and often missing. The paper clean and very fresh as-seen.

The Fan Club Insert: MINT: printed on both sides with the G&L imprint. A small single fold sheet with Bowie merchandise promotions and a form to become a member of the international fan club. This is totally as-made and again guaranteed original. This the rarest part of this album, limited and seldom seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and typical from the collection it came from. Any surface traces minuscule, even as viewed critically under bright light. Visually a lovely record without pressing impurities and flaws, it should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays mostly up to it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds/static are minimal, light and infrequent – silence on those very quiet instrumentals on side two is near impossible without the odd contact sound or sporadic tick – that is just a fact, and most fans and collectors will know this. This a very fine and mostly impressive clean pressing with no tracking issues*, inherent flaws, noises, surface bumps or pits. Few available copies will outperform this first issue significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, and actually wondering at all prior to my play-grade, clearly very well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – like other Bowie albums, I have heard some really poor pressings, and rarely expect perfection. But this gave a very fine account of itself with any reminders of age and format polite and light. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total ‘silence’ is mandatory, and good luck with that on this quite challenging set.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
