DAVID BOWIE
SELF TITLED
SOUTH AFRICA
PHILIPS RED LABEL LP 1970
LAMINATED FLIP-BACK SLEEVE
So up for grabs is the beautiful Self Titled or what is better known as
Space Oddity 1970 LP from South Africa with a Laminated Flip Back Sleeve.
The sleeve is a none gate fold flip-back with a laminated front.
If you double click the pictures you can see lamination lift around
the top edge, spine edge, bottom. No tears, stickers, or writing,
so considering how rare this is, it is still in solid, VG to VG+ condition.
Of the few handful of copies I have ever seen, every sleeve had lamination issues,
or other wear & tear issues, and this copy here for sale is in very nice condition as
you can see from the pics.
The back top left corner boasts the Teal Record company logo,
with Philips logo`s top right and bottom right. Around the edges
it has only partial song lyrics on a white background as opposed
to the UK original which has full lyrics on a royal blue background on the gatefold inside.
The magnificent artwork on the back of this LP as you all know is very interestingly called,
THE WIDTH OF A CIRCLE. As you also know
it is by David`s school days friend, George Underwood.
It has that cartoon of Bowie, the moon landing.
Bowie`s mother with a clown, (just like in the Ashes to Ashes video !)
Just like on the UK version, this sleeve mistakenly calls this artwork The DEPTH of THE circle.
(bottom right in the credits). David Bowie hated mistakes like this
and called Philips, "tacky", for getting the title wrong, obviously
he was thinking of a link to his next Album "The Man who Sold the
World", with the magnificent album track The WIDTH of a Circle, so its easy to
see David`s frustration with Philips Records. The spine has a few bumps but no rips
and all spinal writings are fully readable.
The vinyl retains a very high luster sheen, with very few wispy sleeve marks/hairlines
on either side, very strong EX to EX+! There is very little background noise
only there when you try to hear them in the very quiet parts .
There are no sticks, no clicks, and no jumps at all. It plays magnificently, I would give it 9.0 out of 10!
The labels are clean and free from any unwanted handwriting, stickers, and barely any spindle marks,
indicating hardly any use!! An excellent, very well preserved, thick heavy slab of Vinyl of this Classic Album from South Africa!
Of all the countries around the world that they pressed
David Bowie LP's in, no pressings are harder to find than
those pressed in South Africa. All the Bowie LP's pressed
in South Africa were pressed by the Teal record company.
Many of the sleeves and labels are totally different to the
rest of the world making them highly prized by the hardest
and most serious Bowie completest collectors.
To get your hands on an original South African pressing is
an extremely rare opportunity not to be missed.
This is a record so rare, that condition really, does not matter, anything will do....
so it is the one you fight for, and the one you keep. This is up there with the best of the best.
Original Bowie LP's from South Africa rarely come up for bid,
and this is one you really don't want to miss! One of my favorites albums
by David Bowie, and from my personal collection! Believe me when I say this one
is going to be hard to let go, but it is time for a new home and someone else to enjoy.
