Label Conditions: Both in truly stunning condition, ultra clean, fresh and attractive with just a couple of tiny spindle traces on side one. This genuine first issue looks barely even played and sounds fantastic.

Rarity: The first issues of this included artwork of Bowie with curly hair. Later examples had the cover artwork changed to a spiky haired ‘Ziggy’ style. This original curly haired cover is rarer and far more authentic to the material and era of the songs included in this compilation that features many (and arguably best) of the songs that were included on the impossibly rare Deram debut album. Not only that, this copy has barely been played and sounds superb, the record has the earliest stampers ‘B’ and ‘U’ as well as the January 1970 date-coded inner sleeve. The cover is equally impressive with amazing fresh shine to the laminate. Being realistic, this is probably as close to owning the original debut album as many collectors will get these days with the Deram album getting near impossible to find, let alone in anything like this condition (and at what price?).

Brief Info: Arguably the most ‘essential’ of the ‘World of’ series of albums from Decca that features a high percentage of the songs from the ultra rare Deram debut album. Other obscure songs are included also from the early Bowie catalogue that sound very different from the glam-rock superstar he later became. This is a superb, barely played copy and a first pressing with the rarer ‘Curly Hair’ cover artwork. I still feel these early songs are under-appreciated and ‘Silly Boy Blue’ for me especially is a gem, but there many others as well. Even from the early days, it was clear this man had immense and original song-writing skills and I for one anyway, love his early work. Also worthy of note, check out again the backing musicians on this set, the names speak for themselves. Personally I feel the later ‘Ziggy’ cover does not work for this early material, in fact it is somewhat misleading for the unsuspecting – clearly the cover was changed to entice fans from the glamour era, and that is when most copies of this album were sold. So the first issue copies are considerably more elusive than you may think, especially in this age-defying condition. Also these vintage songs are beautifully recorded and this stereo copy impresses. This is Bowie in his musical infancy, but from small acorns, mighty oaks do grow – this set is indispensible.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably worthy of the second (+). A single format with a Clarifoil laminated front, this covers all the folds and ends on the spine back. The main rear panel is matt and smooth and includes the peep-hole mono/stereo indicator with the blue inner denoting this is a stereo copy. Printed and made in England by Senol Printing Limited.

Lamination & Front: The darkened picture of the young curly-haired Bowie will seldom be seen better than under this fresh, very shiny and clear laminate. Hardly creased or lifted (a mere fine sliver near the bottom edge) with hardly any dulling at all. Any rim impression gentle and light, and this is a thick record housed inside since early 1970. This is simply superb and a great piece of Bowie artwork. For me the Ziggy version is wrong and does not work, this is perfect.

Cover Back: The back has very gently aged with a little grubbiness at the top, but only mere traces elsewhere. The peep-hole neat and crisp and there is hardly a hint of a crease to be seen. Given the amount of white and no protection, this back has also survived the years impressively.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Slight curl towards the right being a little critical. Clearly this storage edge has to support the weight of the record.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any thickening, this guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this edge, the laminate end line quite wide, the exposed strip totally unworn.

Spine and Text: Also very impressive, solid, straight with any compression ligh, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture as the early ones were. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid, clear and uncracked laminate, also nicely centred as-seen.

Corners: All corners are immaculate and crisp, little else to add.

Cover Summary: This ultimate first issue cover is fantastic and could prove a major upgrade for many fans and collectors. To date, it is the very best one I have seen bar none. An age-defying piece of Bowie history that will please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the Decca polylined inner is also in super condition and aged little with any grubbiness very light and only mild traces of the usual adhesive darkening on the seam areas. Clean and unusually fresh with two immaculate windows and the polylining amazingly clear, all edges unsplit with no repairs. Being blue, it indicates a stereo copy, the top square fills the cover’s rear peep-hole to denote as such, this as seen in close-up. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending text, importantly, it has the ultra early 1-70 date-code which translates to January 1970.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface blemishes very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Decca album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault at all, this was a true pleasure to play-grade. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this ultimate first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
