RARE 1971 ORIGINAL 1st PRESS US ATLANTIC RECORDS WHITE LABEL PROMO LP

Rare original US Atlantic Records SD 7203 White label PROMO LP marked "Sample Copy Not for Sale" from 1971, great line-up of contributing artists include: Graham Nash, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Michael Shrieve, Jack Casady, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Joni Mitchell and on and on. Thick card textured gatefold cover is in EX condition with a DJ promo copy sticker on the front. Vinyl is in lovely EX+ condition.

Stereo US original white label promotional copy of this classic by David Crosby of The Byrds and CSN&Y with its original thick textured gatefold cover. Pressed on thick heavy vinyl with Artisan mastering stamp meaning the sound quality is superior on this release. Promotional copies of vinyl record releases were almost always true first pressings and were often the highest quality pressing made as they were held to higher standards being sent out to reviewers as well as influential disc jockeys and key television stations. The record label would want to make a good impression and these pressings were often made directly from new clean master disks.

This is an original US vinyl pressing on Atlantic 7203 from 1971. David Crosby's first and best solo album. This is a hard to find stereo white label promo copy. It comes in the original textured thick gatefold cover. This copy has a promotional DJ copy sticker suggesting cuts for air play and his name and the album title on a sticker on the front cover (regular stock copies did not have his name anywhere on the cover which made it harder to recognize and to know that it was a David Crosby album!!)

The cast of supporting musicians includes; Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Jefferson Airplane's Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Grace Slick, as well as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Graham Nash, and others....essential....hazy, crazy, drugged out psych jams, very heady, hence the album title....

The above is 'scrawled' into the dead wax and has
Artisan mastering stampers in the runout groove on each
side (these look kind of like a snare drum with a pair of drum
sticks placed atop) and Artisan was a L.A. mastering house that did
a lot of excellent work particularly in the early '70s and finding an album with
the Artisan stamp in the dead wax is almost always a guarantee of good sound, assuming the vinyl's in good shape.

(A lovely thick vinyl US Atlantic Records PROMO 1st PRESSING which retains all its full lustre and sparkles almost like new. The record delivers excellent audio throughout with great sound clarity and only occasional surface static. The thick vinyl disc rates visually at EX+ under a strong light....One or two very light and superficial wispy hairlines - mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are not audible, and do not affect the visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The sound quality is excellent on this rare promo release....It has the Artisan mastering stamp in the runout groove. One of my favourite TAS discs.)

(Textured gatefold cover is in overall EX condition with a DJ promo copy sticker on the front. There is a small 2cms scuff on the top rear seam edge and the begininning of a 3cms split on the lower rear seam. There is only a minor bit of edge & corner wear. The spine text is all legible and clear. The inside of the gatefold is very clean. A very nice original USA 1st pressing thick textured card gatefold cover)

NOTES

David Crosby's debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name, is a one-shot wonder of dreamy but ominous California ambience. The songs range from brief snapshots of inspiration (the angelic chorale-vocal showcase on "Orleans" and the acappella closer, "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here") to the full-blown, rambling western epic "Cowboy Movie," and there are absolutely no false notes struck or missteps taken.
No one before or since has gotten as much mileage out of a wordless vocal as Crosby does on "Tamalpais High (At About 3)" and "Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)," and because the music is so relaxed, each song turns into its own panoramic vista. Those who don't go for trippy Aquarian sentiment, however, may be slightly put off by the obscure, cosmic storytelling of the gorgeous "Laughing" or the ambiguous (but pointed) social questioning of "What Are Their Names," but in actuality it is an incredibly focused album. Even when a song as pretty as "Traction in the Rain" shimmers with its picked guitars and autoharp, the album is coated in a distinct, persistent menace that is impossible to shake. It is a shame that Crosby would continue to descend throughout the remainder of the decade and the beginning of the next into aimless drug addiction, and that he would not issue another solo album until 18 years later. As it is, If I Could Only Remember My Name is a shambolic masterpiece, meandering but transcendentally so, full of frayed threads. Not only is it among the finest splinter albums out of the CSNY diaspora, it is one of the defining moments of hungover spirituality from the era.

By Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Jerry Garcia. By Jefferson Airplane members David Frieberg, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen, and Grace Slick.  Plus Joni Mitchell, and Gregg Rolie. David Geffen is credited with direction. Photographs are by Henry Diltz. All songs are written by David Crosby except for one Nash/Young/Crosby song and one Young/Garcia/Lesh/Shrieve/Crosby song.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.
