Label/Format: Atlantic – Original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, fresh, clean and highly attractive with just two or three light spine marks on side two and barely any on one. Two classic labels that simply defy their great ages.

Cat Number: 2401005.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good weight for this record. I once had a Plum copy of this one that weight a mere 101 grams.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce especially in very lightly played condition. This was a very late ‘plum’ issue with the label design and catalogue number changing within the same year. Prime condition examples on this original label are at a premium and this record has little to fault. What makes this copy extra special is the cover: I will rarely even contemplate grading a fragile cover like this as Mint, but I am surely tempted to on this beauty. I have never seen one quite like it – it truly could pass as new and is of connoisseur quality. The original Polydor inner sleeve is date coded 0371 making it one of the first to be seen in the shop. The record is gorgeous and looks hardly even played. Such is life, nothing is ever ‘perfect’, side two has a tiny mark that emits a few light ticks, but that apart it’s stunning. A copy like this is scarce, with a cover like this very rare indeed. If anyone reading this listing wants the absolute ultimate in cover upgrades, look no further – but in it’s own right, the complete item is still exceptional.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the greatest albums ever and possibly one of the last ‘Plum’ Atlantics before the transition to Kinney. Peaking at 12 in both the US and UK album charts this Dave Crosby classic was justifiably popular and remains his finest ever moment as a ‘solo’ artist. Not that solo is really the correct term here because he is joined by the cream of San Francisco artists of this era. In no particular order; Crosby performs with all the following: Graham Nash; Neil Young; Phil Lesh; Bill Kreutzmann; Jorma Kaukonen; Grace Slick; Gregg Rolie; Joni Mitchell; Mickey Hart; David Frieberg; Henry Diltz; Paul Kantner; Michael Shrieve; Gary Burden; Stephen Barncard; Robert Hammer; David Geffen; Ethan Crosby; Laura Allen; Jerry Garcia; Jack Cassady, Ronald Stone and Elliot Roberts – as you would expect the backing and performances are nothing less than immaculate, a blend of musical brilliance seldom bettered on an album of this type. Vocally, Crosby was inspired and never sounded much better than here, spiritual, powerful and convincing, a man at the peak of his powers. The backing musicians are allowed space to perform and this is an unselfish record. This is a beautiful copy too and purchased by just the one-owner-from-new. Even by anyone’s standards, quite how this fragile cover has been so beautifully stored and protected is beyond me. I have seen a few nice ones over the years, but this is sublime and it looks just made. I can hardly stop looking at it. If you trolled the Net another 10 years, you will never this original cover better. The record is almost as impressive with just that one tiny mark near the start of side two that does emit a few brief light clicks. On an ultimately difficult record with several quiet passages, this is hardly a disaster and few will still better this. With absolute proof of it’s issue, the inner sleeve is date-coded 0371 (March 1971) which proves the vintage of this beautifully preserved copy – along with matrixes that can never lie, it reitterates it’s one of the earliest copies ever made.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: which makes this remarkable one all the more incredible. I have never, and probably will never again see one quite like it. Look at the pictures and admire that incredible beauty of a museum quality cover.

Cover Grade and Format: PRACTICALLY MINT as made: I cannot grade this fragile cover less, it really looks stunning and if I cannot put a Mint grading on this, I will never be able to. A gatefold format and unlaminated with a very flat matt, smooth finish. The card is quite soft and fragile and is seldom seen without significant wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: Totally sublime and with a freshness that looks just off the printing press. If I do have to nit-pick – a tiny and ultra fine and light tip crease on the bottom left corner tip – that being the only blemish on the entire cover – that’s why ‘Practically Mint’, minus this minuscule crease trace, an unprecedented Full Mint would have applied.

Cover Back: Flawless magnificence, as per the front unrubbed, faded, creased. Simply gorgeous and not even a trace of record rim impression.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Pristine, with pictures of all the players on view. I cannot fault this as all.

Top Edges: Totally unrubbed, as clean as new and dead straight.

Bottom Edges: As above, being an unprotected storage edge, almost remarkable.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Ultra clean and sharp with no wear and totally devoid of any crinkle, burring or thickening. The front close, the record enters on the back. Viewed end-on just emphasises how thin this card is.

Spine and Text: Mint: totally unworn, even the very ends. Solid, clean, straight and folded totally square so the edges meet up flush and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: Can I count any tiny white tip areas as wear? – it would be beyond critical to do so, these again as almost as made. The one minuscule aforementioned tip semi-crease apart, all are immaculate with nigh-on perfect 90 degree shape retained.

Cover Summary: Phew! – not just is this in stunning almost Mint condition, it has to be taken further. Simply because it is so incredibly prone to all forms of wear. I can only tip-my-hat to the only original owner, it can be argued to preserve a cover so delicate to this standard is almost beyond the call-of-duty, bordering on impossible. But seeing IS believing, this is a show-piece example – one to hold, draw breath and admire. You could search forever to find one to match, let alone better it. A work of art and I will use that word again – SUBLIME!!

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this copy includes it’s original Polydor style lined inner which as only modest ageing due to the usual darkening of the adhesive on the seams. This has two immaculate, crisp and undamaged window circles and very clear lining that has only very mild crinkle traces. Few creases at all and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly, this is date-coded 11 0371 (March 1971), proving it to be one of the earliest pressings ever made in the UK (please see this detail in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / EXCELLENT: as stated above, one tiny mark near the start of side two emits a brief few light clicks. A very fine visual example that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks or blemishes are very light, fine and faint, these seen with scrutiny under bright light. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors, but unlike the cover, not quite the perfectionist.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Atlantic record mostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault other than the small blemish mentioned above a couple of times. This has always been a difficult album and few will ever play anything close to ‘silent’. Talking to a couple friends about this in the last day or so, both said they bought copies of this round issue time and they both agreed pressing quality was from quiet. So this one I also feel is exceptional. Any surface sound is very gentle, infrequent and light indeed. An album with many very quiet passages, what chance a 40+ year-old copy when even brand new ones were often noisy from day one? This offers clear, precise, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, beautifully produced by the man himself. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with no pops or pressing noises noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a very challenging and difficult album. Absolute silence is a near impossible ask especially if playing on ultra revealing equipment – the LP12 takes no prisoners and reveals all the beauty of any vinyl record (as well as the bad). The odd crackle trace or sporadic one-off tick is almost impossible to avoid, that is simply being realistic. Nothing ‘bad’ on this copy – okay, a few light clicks as mentioned (again), but little else and it offers hugely enjoyable and mostly very clean audio quality. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been amazing well stored within a non-smoking environment. A beautiful recording and a gateway into the recording studio itself, nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy does it almost maximum justice and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: Recognised by critics and fans as one of the genuine all-time greats, this was Crosby’s debut ‘solo’ album, and a very busy time for the man after first producing Joni Mitchell’s debut and teaming up with Stills, Nash and Young for other albums. This record is an extraordinary work by any standards and essentially a mood piece with Crosby using vocal and guitar chords to stunning effect, the final song even has an eerie Gregorian chant feel, an amazing finale to a sublime release. This album is a real treasure and I am delighted to offer such a fine all-round copy. The cover truly has to be seen to be believed. Remember the Kinney orange and green labelled copies were only just around the corner when this album was issued making the ‘Plums’ more scarce and somewhat elusive. Especially so in such fine condition – the record is not perfect – but still a very impressive example. A host of stars make this record very special – as well as being a late Plum album, it should appeal to scarce vinyl collectors anyway. For those who originally thought Dave Crosby is not really for them, think again, give this one a try, you WILL discover a man inspired, this is as uplifting as music gets. No music lover could fail to be moved by this.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
