DAVID VORHAUS / BRIAN GASCOIGNE
THE SLY CORMORANT BY BRIAN PATTEN LP
Argo
Obscure original british pressing with White Noise's David Vorhaus collaboration with Brian Gascoigne in producing a killer soundtrack for Brian Patten's "Sly Cormorant".
Some info on the release: Obscure and absolutely unknown release from the mid-70's, this is the hidden gem of english electronic/experimental music scene!! Supposed to be a children's album with stories from british poet and writer Brian Patten, but i guess the choice to use David Vorhaus and Brian Gascoigne for the music was crucial and resulted in a really interesting album. Vorhaus uses a wide array of synthesizers and experimental electronics creating all kinds of weird sounds, while he is backed by Gascoigne who also plays synthesizers, but also percussion and keyboards. While the composing duo is aided by musicians Cathy Weiss, Suki Towb, David Lawrence and John Williams. A groundbreaking album, never re-released on any medium (and my guess is that it won't be), so this might be your only chance to grab a copy!! Please notice that this one is a really hard to find album, my second copy in the last 10 years!!
Some words about Vorhaus: "David Vorhaus was initially joined by BBC Radiophonic Workshop composers Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, both ex of electronic music project Unit Delta Plus.
In 1968 White Noise released the groundbreaking album An Electric Storm on Island Records. The album was created using a variety of tape manipulation techniques, and is notable for its early use of the first British synthesizer, the EMS Synthi VCS3. Amongst many oddities, the first track on the album Love Without Sound employed speeded up tape edits of Vorhaus playing the double bass to create violin and cello sounds.
'I use voices a lot too, but not as conventional vocals. I always use a lot of voices, and if somebody having an orgasm in the background is used as part of one of the waveforms, it makes the sound more interesting, without the listener actually knowing what they're hearing.' Interview with David Vorhaus
Although not initially commercially successful for Island, it has over the years proved to be a cult classic, going on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide, namechecked by such contemporary artists as The Orb and Julian Cope, influencing such contemporary acts Broadcast, Add N to (X), and Secret Chiefs 3.
A brief extract from An Electric Storm can be heard in the Hammer Film Productions film Dracula AD 1972."
This record was produced in a time where the research for alternative sources of sound were all around, for example with the electronic musics of Pierre Schaeffer(musique concrete), Trevor Wishart, Pierre Henry, Stockhausen and Parmegiani, iannis Xenakis, Brian Eno and of course Tod Dockstader. To my opinion this is some of the most important experimental music, together with John Cage(fluxus), Alvin Curran, Henri Chopin(sound poetry) and of course are like the similar works of Ellen Fullman and Annea Lockwood!! The sounds on this record are also quite close to the "pop electronic" sounds of Jean-Jacques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley, Andromeda Strain, Dick Hyman, Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, while this one should certainly appeal to persons who also like Seastones, Frank Garvey, Silver Apples, Matmos and Ondioline, Arp, Theremin, Aphex Twin, and of course Oskar Sala. Very rare, get this now!! Very rarely seen on ebay!!
Condition: Vinyl lie in excellent condition, looks crystal clear and plays nicely with some minor crackle, while cover lies in very good(+) condition, being an ex-library copy with library stamps and split on top, otherwise ok.
