DECCA LXT 2859 Orange & Gold  SCHURICHT  BRAHMS SYM NO 2 -  Very Rare

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADING

GOOD

This is a much sought after record, but this copy and its cover can only be graded as Good.

It is a difficult record to describe. Both surfaces do look clean and have retained their shine but there are surface marks. These are not eye-catching scratches but are mainly lighter hairlines, fewer on side 2. The record, however, does play with noticeable surface sounds which I cannot wholly attribute to dust etc.

There is, for example, noticeable surface noise in the opening minute of side 1 and this recurs, less noticeably and less frequently, thereafter. There are light clicks and pops from time to time, one or two of which are briefly repetitive. Side 2 has less unwanted sounds.

There are, however, no major pops, no jumps and no skips on either side. There are in fact periods when there is minimal or no unwanted surface sound at all. The quality of the recording is very good and the playing superb.

COVER GRADING

GOOD

The cover is intact and with little damage but it is marked. In addition to being generally soiled, there are a number of light ink lines which have been drawn randomly across the face – infant art I suspect! The name of a previous owner has been written in white ink, top right on the front.

Despite its faults, I did find this a reasonable, mostly very good, listening experience. Like many Mono’s of this age, (first issued in 1954), it has acquired a patina of age which will not appeal to the fastidious collector but will provide someone with the pleasure of owning and hearing a valued and much sought after recording.
