Label/Format: Harvest with matt very gently textured surfaces. This a ‘first’ pressing without the EMI logo and ‘THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ rim text.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only reasonably light, very fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This copy plays superbly.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: The fourth studio Deep Purple album that many consider their very best. No more cover version songs, all material was written by the band and their sound now became very heavy and loud. It took the rock world by storm and sold strongly in Europe, but more predictably, it fared relatively poorly in the United States were it only just scraped into their chart at a meagre 143. This heavy pressed first label format copy plays superbly and was a joy to play-grade. Indeed this one of the cleanest all-round copies I have play-tested for some time. These early-pressed copies just seem to have that bit extra in terms of sound quality and detail and this failed to disappoint. Any minor visual blemishes ignored and includes a superb clean, fresh cover and neat Harvest inner. One hard rock fans will treasure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated. This covers all folds and ends inside on the bottom edges, hence the inside faces are mostly matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain superb shine, the laminate fresh and clear with no lifting and minimal creasing or blemishes. This one of the finest all-round covers I have seen for this album that often appears aged and dulled. The famous band heads in stone look fantastic when seen under such beautifully preserved laminate that has been cover-protected for many years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside either, the surfaces being clean and fresh as well. No creasing and the laminate unusually clean without the usual grime lines to the ends that have not stuck together as many do. Any handling marks to the vulnerable matt black areas few and light.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four still mainly straight and flush with the laminate smooth and unworn. The lack of scuffing, chipping and peeling is quite unusual on such covers.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All edges very sharp with hardly any thickening. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine for one that often goes tatty with deep recesses and peeling. Any recess from opening on this one gentle and light and all laminate is retained. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, still easy to read as-seen with minimal sinkage into the gentle recess. All this detail clearly tells this cover has not been opened and closed too many times over nearly 50 years.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and ultra light, better than excellent shape is retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic hard rock 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: still quite clean and lacking the usual browing most of these acquire over time. A little light corner creasing with the lining still intact as are the edges.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly light, most quite wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. A fine fine hairlines, but no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light little register and record plays superbly. Visually a lovely heavy-pressed example that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album plays a grade above it’s still high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Separation, detail and dynamics are all enjoyed to the near maximum on this early-pressed copy. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises – that often not the case, especially on later copies. Few available ones will outperform this early ‘first’ pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played mostly and has been generally well stored within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better for sound and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
