·      GENUINE JAPANESE  PRESSING (WE ARE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE GENERATION OF THE PRESSING; IT APPEARS THAT THE ONLY THING THAT SETS APART VARIOUS GENERATIONS OF THE JAPANESE PRESSINGS IS THE DIFFERENT YEN PRICE ON THE OBI STRIP; THIS APPEARS TO BE A SECOND OR THIRD PRESSING, MADE NOT LATER THAN 1974, BUT IN ANY EVENT INDISTINGISHIBLE FROM THE FIRST PRESSING FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES)

·      PLEASE NOTE: WHILE THERE IS A GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT THIS IS THE SAME ALBUM RELEASED OUTSIDE OF THE JAPAN AS "MADE IN JAPAN" (THE AMERICAN RELEASE TITLED 'MADE IN JAPAN' CAME OUT A FULL  YEAR AFTER THE JAPANESE RELEASE TITLED 'LIVE IN JAPAN), THERE ARE SOME SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WHICH NEED TO BE NOTED HERE: FIRSTLY, THE JAPANESE-ONLY RELEASE ("LIVE IN JAPAN") FEATURES RADICALLY DIFFERENT ARTWORK AND IS UNIQUE TO THE JAPANESE MARKET.  SECONDLY, WHILE THE WORLDWIDE RELEASE ("MADE IN JAPAN") SPECIFICALLY STATES THAT ONLY TWO TRACKS ('LAZY' AND 'MULE') WERE RECORDED IN TOKYO WHEREAS THE REMAINING OF THE PROGRAM WAS RECORDED IN OSAKA, THE JAPANESE RELEASE CATEGORICALLY STATES THAT ALL TRACKS WERE RECORDED IN TOKYO.  FINALLY, THE TIME MEASUREMENTS ARE DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE TWO RELEASES ON VIRTUALLY ALL TRACKS: THE TRACK TIMING DISCREPANCY IS THE BIGGEST ON TWO TRACKS: STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN (ALMOST 20 SECONDS LONGER ON LIVE IN JAPAN THAN MADE IN JAPAN) AND SPACE TRACKING (12 SECONDS LONGER ON LIVE IN TOKYO). WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF THESE DISCREPANCIES. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT, PRIOR TO THE AMERICAN RELEASE, THE AMERICAN ARM OF WARNER BROTHERS DECIDED TO SWIPE SOME TRACKS RECORDED IN TOKYO WITH THE VERSIONS RELEASED IN OSAKA, BUT THIS IS MERELY OUR SPECULATION.

Deep Purple's classic double live album Made in Japan was released in December of 1972 in the UK and sometime in early April of 1973 here in the US.

The album was recorded as Deep Purple were touring in support of their classic album Machine Head in Japan in August of 1972 by long-time engineer Martin Birch during the Japanese leg of Purple's Machine Head tour. The versions of the songs that appear on the Made in Japan album were the best performances of each track but gives you pretty much a feel of a near-complete show.

We begin the first side of the album with a stellar version of "Highway Star" which is done with more power and finesse than the studio version as lead singer Ian Gillan sings and screams his heart out and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore plays like a demon possessed. Next is a stellar version of the epic "Child in Time" which literally destroys its studio counterpart by a longshot. I swear Gillan's screams on here were unearthly and sounding like Satan had taken possession but what a performance. Keyboard player Jon Lord is incredible here as is Blackmore's insane guitar work.

The album's original second side kicked off with the definitive version of Purple's signature song "Smoke On the Water". This version blows the studio version out of the water as it has more guts and power than the studio version. Also, Blackmore gets to stretch out here as does Lord at the end of the track. Next is "The Mule" which is drummer Ian Paice's killer drum solo and proves he is arguably one of the best left handed drummers in all of rock and roll history and one of the greatest drummers ever.

The original double album's second disc and third side starts with a stellar version of "Strange Kind of Woman" which is an amazing version of that stellar track. We then follow with an excellent version of the Machine Head album track "Lazy" which has some excellent bass playing from Roger Glover plus Gillan screams his lungs out and plays some mean harmonica. Lastly Messieurs Lord, Blackmore and Paice play the track as if they were playing their last concert.

The album's original last side was taken up by an almost 20 minute version, you heard me right 20 minute version, of the classic Machine Head track "Space Truckin'". This version starts out as a jam before going into a killer version of the track and ending with a 15 minute or so jam with all four band members playing like their lives depended on it with some trippy keyboard effects from Lord and wild guitar pyrotechnics from Blackmore (this was years before he would make guitar smashing an end of show ritual).

Made in Japan was also a first in live rock album history as there were NO OVERDUBS whatsoever on the album. Furthermore, much to the chagrin of KISS fans and those who love Alive, Made in Japan was one of the first double albums to chart in the US Top 10 as it reached #6 on the Billboard album charts in 1973 thanks to the live Smoke On the Water and has sold a million plus in the US.

Made in Japan was proof that the live album did matter and is possibly the best live rock album of the 1970s hands down!

These Japanese hi-grade , virgin-vinyl, extended-dynamic range vinyl pressings - while they were imported  in the 1970's and early 1980's - were audiophile and connoisseur delights  (we   have not  seen some of these titles in circulation in years – some of them are highly collectible). These majestic recordings received an  intense, meticulous and laborious treatment like very few other recordings did.   They are characterized by the boosted dynamic and frequency range, almost compulsive attention paid to the fine detail and integrity of the pressing and highest quality  of the material. Many of  these recordings remain unsurpassed, delivering music  reproduction as close to  the actual recording session as possible. In the best tradition of some of the major Japanese corporations -  such as RCA Victor Co. (Nippon),  Warner-Pioneer Corporation of Japan or EMI-Toshiba Corporation  -  the sound quality of the Japanese pressings is, generally,  truly extraordinary - much better, we firmly believe, than the corresponding first pressings of the albums in question.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire this great album in its finest audio format, no longer in print, and no longer easily obtainable.

(b)         The records come in their hi-grade PVC inner sleeves, which have - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)         The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         In addition, the record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

(e)         The album comes with the original Japanese-only insert/lyrics sheet still intact.

(f)          In addition, the album comes with the original Japanese 'OBI' sash/strip, still wrapped around the gatefold cover

(g)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn (nothing significant)
