A BREAKDOWN OF THE ARTIST/S :-
Deep Purple evolved in 1968 following sessions to form a band around former Searchers drummer Chris Curtis (Born Christopher Crummey, 26 August 1941, Oldham, Lancashire, England). Jon Lord (Born 9 June 1941, Leicester, Leicestershire, England; keyboards) and Nick Simper (Born 3 November 1945, Norwood Green, Southall, Middlesex, England; bass), veterans, respectively, of the Artwoods and Johnny Kidd And The Pirates, joined guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (Born Richard Hugh Blackmore, 14 April 1945, Weston-Super-Mare, Avon, England) in rehearsals for this new act, initially dubbed Roundabout. Curtis dropped out within days, and when Dave Curtis (bass) and Bobby Woodman (drums) also proved incompatible, two members of Maze, Rod Evans (Born 19 January 1947, Slough, England; vocals) and Ian Paice (Born 29 June 1948, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England; drums), replaced them.
Having adopted the Deep Purple name following a brief Scandinavian tour, the quintet began recording their debut album, which they patterned on US band Vanilla Fudge. Shades Of Deep Purple included dramatic rearrangements of well-known songs, including "Hey Joe" and "Hush", the latter becoming a Top 5 US hit when issued as a single. Lengthy tours ensued as the band, all but ignored at home, steadfastly courted the burgeoning American concert circuit. The Book Of Taliesyn and Deep Purple also featured several excellent reworkings, notably "Kentucky Woman" (Neil Diamond) and "River Deep - Mountain High" (Ike And Tina Turner), but the unit also drew acclaim for its original material and the dramatic interplay between Lord and Blackmore.
In July 1969, both Evans and Simper were axed from the line-up, which was then buoyed by the arrival of Ian Gillan (Born 19 August 1945, Hounslow, Middlesex, England; vocals) and Roger Glover (Born 30 November 1945, Brecon, Wales; bass) from the pop band Episode Six. Acknowledged by aficionados as the "classic" Deep Purple line-up, the reshaped quintet made its album debut on the grandiose Concerto For Group And Orchestra, scored by Lord and recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (reprised in October 1999 at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra). Its orthodox successor, In Rock, established the band as a leading heavy metal attraction and introduced such enduring favourites as "Speed King" and "Child In Time". Gillan's powerful intonation brought a third dimension to their sound and this new-found popularity in the UK was enhanced when an attendant single, "Black Night", reached number 2. "Strange Kind Of Woman" followed it into the Top 10, while Fireball and Machine Head topped the album chart. The latter included the riff-laden "Smoke On The Water", now lauded as a seminal example of the hard rock oeuvre and a Top 5 hit in America. The album was also the first release on the band's own Purple label.
Although the platinum-selling Made In Japan captured Deep Purple's live prowess, relations within the band grew increasingly strained, and Who Do We Think We Are! marked the end of this highly successful line-up. The departures of Gillan and Glover robbed Deep Purple of an expressive frontman and imaginative arranger, although David Coverdale (Born 22 September 1951, Saltburn-By-The Sea, North Yorkshire, England; vocals) and Glenn Hughes (Born 21 August 1952, Cannock, Staffordshire, England; bass, ex-Trapeze) brought a new impetus to the act. Burn and Stormbringer both reached the Top 10, but Blackmore grew increasingly dissatisfied with the band's direction and in May 1975 left to form Rainbow. US guitarist Tommy Bolin (Born Thomas Richard Bolin, 1 August 1951, Sioux City, Iowa, USA, d. 4 December 1976, Miami, Florida, USA), formerly of the James Gang, joined Deep Purple for Come Taste The Band, but his jazz soul style was incompatible with the band's heavy metal sound, and a now-tiring act folded in 1976 following a farewell UK tour.
Coverdale formed Whitesnake, Paice and Lord joined Tony Ashton in Paice, Ashton And Lord, while Bolin died of a heroin overdose within months of Purple's demise. Judicious archive and "best of' releases kept the band in the public eye, as did the high profile enjoyed by its several ex-members. Pressure for a reunion bore fruit in 1984 when Gillan, Lord, Blackmore, Glover and Paice completed Perfect Strangers. A second set, The House Of Blue Light, ensued, but recurring animosity between Gillan and Blackmore resulted in the singer's departure following the in-concert Nobody's Perfect. Former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (Born Joseph Linquito, 2 August 1951, Hackensack, New Jersey, USA) was brought into the line-up for 1990"s Slaves And Masters as the band steadfastly maintained their revitalized career. Gillan rejoined in 1993 only to quit, yet again, shortly afterwards, while his old sparring partner, Blackmore, also bailed out the following year, to be replaced briefly by Joe Satriani (Born 15 July 1956). The line-up that recorded the credible Purpendicular and Abandon in the late 90s comprised Steve Morse (Born 28 July 1954, Hamilton, Ohio, USA) on guitar, with Lord, Gillan, Glover and Paice. At the start of the new millennium, Lord announced his retirement and was replaced in the line-up by rock veteran Don Airey. He was featured on the band's 2003 studio album, Bananas.
Time and time again Deep Purple is cited as the band that crafted heavy rock to a fine art. Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath they remain the genre's undisputed leaders.

THE HISTORY OF THE RECORD :- Made in Japan was recorded live over three nights during 15–17 August 1972 at K?sei Nenkin Kaikan, Osaka and at Budokan, Tokyo, Japan. Four of the tracks come from the album Machine Head which had been released earlier that year.
The album was at first seen as somewhat unimportant by the band members, and only Roger Glover and Ian Paice showed up to mix it. It is organist Jon Lord's favourite Deep Purple album, and he describes the release as follows:
"Deep Purple was at the height of its powers. That double album was the epitome of what we stood for in those days. It wasn’t meant to be released outside of Japan. The Japanese said, 'Will you please make a live album?' We said, 'We don’t make live albums; we don’t believe in them.' We finally said okay, but said we wanted the rights to the tapes because we didn’t want the album to be released outside of Japan. That album only cost about $3,000 to make. It sounded pretty good, so we said to Warner Bros., 'Do you want this?' They said, 'No, live albums don’t happen.' They wound up putting it out anyway and it went platinum in about two weeks."The release in the US was delayed, until April 1973, because Warner Bros. wanted to release Who Do We Think We Are first.
The three concerts recorded were later released as Live in Japan 3-CD box set (1993). According to the liner notes for that set, unlike many live albums, there are no overdubs or studio additions to the original album.
The remastered anniversary edition, issued in 1998, has an extra CD of encores played on the tour in Japan and has the colour scheme of the cover reversed so cover is black with gold print. There was also a numbered limted edition purple vinyl release, on which the stage banter of tracks 1-6 was edited. There are 3 songs each to Sides 1 and 2, and "Space Truckin'" was placed on Side 3 in order to allocate The Encores to Side 4
THE COVER :- Laminated outer gatefold sleeve with textured inner
THE LABEL :- Purple labels
THE VINYL VISUALLY :- On initial inspection of this piece of vinyl I cannot see any areas of immediate concern. The vinyls sit perfectly flat on the turntable so there are no nasty warps to worry about. Both pieces of vinyl are extremely clean with barely a mark covering the both of them. I doubt you would find a better pair. I would grades the visuals as a close Near Mint.
THE VINYL PLAY GRADED :- The playgrading of the vinyl reveals no lessening in the sound quality. They both live up to their visual grading. There is very very minimal surface noise which is restricted to a little static build up in soft passages and in deadwax. To be honest you would be very hard pressed to find two better sounding vinyls for this particular set. There is no distortion at all even at very high volume. A lovely set of vinyl that as the visuals suggest grade close to if not Near Mint.
THE SLEEVE FRONT CONDITION :- The front of the Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve is in fairly nice shape with just one or two minor things to point ot. There is a small amount of ringwear which is ever so slightly grubby in places around its diameter. There is the odd light crease which are in the corners, nothing overly apparent but they are there nonetheless. The opening edge is slightly faded but again a very minor point. Generally the front of the sleeve is very tidy and I would grade as Excellent condition. There are no stickers or damage caused by previously removed ones
THE SLEEVE REAR CONDITION :- The rear of the sleeve is free from writing, free from stickers or evidence of previously removed stickers. There is as on the front some light ringwear and light creasing in the bottom two corners. Again the opening edge seems a bit faded in colour. There is a small tide mark in the far right corner it looks like to me as though some damp has got under the laminate, this may just be a fading in colour but it is worth a mention. I would grade as generally Excellent condition.
THE INNER GATEFOLD CONDITION :- The inner of the sleeve is not laminated on this album and is prone to more wear tha the outer. This one however has faired very well. There is very light ringwear which has caused some rubbing of the surface at the bottom (please refer to photos). That apart there are just two small corner creases in the bottom corners. A very nice condition inner of the sleeve though and is graded as close if not Excellent condition.
THE SIGNATURE CONDITION :- The signature is in excellent shape. I am not a signature expert and I am not implying any authenticty to it though. It does appear to stand up to other genuine Ian Gillan signatures that I have seen though and I would go out on a limb to say it is the real deal. I am welcome to any authenticator to cast judgement on it though and I have put a good sized close up of the signature for exactly that reason.
THE LABEL SIDE ONE AND TWO CONDITION :- Original Purple labels in excellent order free from stickers or writing and no damage at all, light signs of play around the spindle hole. Excellent Plus condition.
THE LABEL SIDE THREE AND FOUR CONDITION :- Original Purple labels in excellent order free from stickers or writing and no damage at all, light signs of play around the spindle hole. Excellent Plus condition.
THE SPINE CONDITION :- The writing on the spine is all crystal clear, no spine splits at all just some creasing along the length as being a double album the spines have a tendancy to get slightly crushed when in amongst a lot of other albums. Not bad though considering it is 40 years old.
THE INNER SLEEVE CONDITION :- Generic white inners in Excellent condition. They are not the same though as one has rounded corners and one angled corners. One clearly got replaced over the years.
THE EXTRAS :- No extras were given with this album
