DEEP PURPLE The Book Of Taliesyn (Harvest SHVL 751) RARE UK 1st Pressing No EMI MINT-
RARE original UK first pressing of "The Book Of Taliesyn" by Deep Purple, on Harvest Records (July 1969).
With its swooping orchestral arrangements, "The Book Of Taliesyn" shows the growing influence of organist and band co-leader Jon Lord. The then-healthy competitiveness between Ritchie Blackmore and Lord would result in a temporary triumph of the latter (on the eponymous third album and its classic-oriented statement, "April").
However, that would all soon change with Blackmore`s guitar-oriented hard rock sound of "Deep Purple In Rock". The huge success of "In Rock" paved the way for Deep Purple`s super-stardom. The rest, as they say, is history.
GRADING:
EX++ COVER. Original sleeve with laminated outer and a number of creases along the spine, back and front (about a dozen in all). The spine is also a little compressed, probably due to tight storage, but remains fully legible. Lightly bumped rear corner (at bottom left).
Otherwise very nice, with tight, sharp opening edge and unblemished top and bottom edges. Please see photos for details.
The sleeve also bears a small (removable) sticker from EMI Switzerland which advertises: "EMI Underground - Win a flight to London" (in German and French). It`s highly unlikely you will ever encounter another copy with this EMI sticker!
EX++ to MINT- RECORD with a few light hairlines. The record plays near-perfectly with only minimal background crackle between some tracks, as well as in quiet passages of "Anthem".
The first pressing Harvest labels have no EMI stamps and feature the legend "Sold in the U.K. subject to resale..." at top left. The labels have a few spindle lines on both sides.
The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "A-1G" and "B-1G", respectively. This clearly indicates that what we have here is nothing less than a very first UK pressing of "The Book Of Taliesyn"!
PLEASE NOTE: Over the next few months, we will regularly be offering a number of rarities, mainly progressive and avantgarde records: A very discerning, long-time collector friend left us his treasure chest! Not only are many of these lps extremely rare, they are almost all in MINT(-) condition - both inside and out.
As we slowly inch our way closer to spring, we will be spreading the goodies out, in no special order. Suffice to say that the best is still to come!
