DEREK & THE DOMINOS "LAYLA" original white label promo pressing of 1970 U.S. Atco gatefold stereo double LP w/2 stickers on front cover. Stereo SD 2-704. M-/M.
Eric Clapton had previously released one solo studio album but the world was not ready for this double LP masterpiece in 1970. In fact, there was a bit of confusion over the name of the group at first with Eric becoming the alter-ego Derek & the Dominoes- sort of a throw-back name that conjured up a 50s Rockabilly band. But one listen to the music dispels all doubt- the title track "Layla" (about Patty Boyd/Harrison) is a bona-fide classic & there are many other great songs here- "Bell Bottom Blues", a heartfelt version of Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing" & Big Bill Broonzy's "Key To The Highway" to name just 3 of the 14 titles on this LP. The group, most of whom toured with Eric in the Delaney & Bonnie band, consisted of ace session players Carl Radle on bass, Bobby Whitlock on keyboards, Jim Gordon on drums with Duane Allman & Eric trading licks on lead & slide guitars. This album ranks as one of Clapton's finest moments. Original 1970 white label promo stereo pressing on Atco w/2 stickers on the front cover- a 2" round day-glo orange sticker in the upper right stating "Promotional Copy/Not For Sale" & a 2" x 3" clear plastic w/ black lettering sticker stating "2-LP Set, Layla, Derek & The Dominos, Eric Clapton, Jim Gordon, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, Duane Allman" on the upper left (this sticker was affixed to the shrink wrap on stock copies).

Gatefold cover has minor wear on the edges, very faint ring wear on the front bottom plus the 2 stickers on the front cover. It is bright & intact with no split seams- rated at a strong near MINT. Color snapshots of the group in the studio are inside the gatefold. The records play perfectly with no scratches or scuffs. Very few spins on these records. The white labels denote that it is an original pressing from 1971 distributed by Atco. "Sample Copy/Not For Sale" is printed above the "Stereo" designation on the middle right side of al 4 sides. Records are in MINT condition. You will be hard pressed to find a better original copy of this record!
